I'd join the military before I'd be a cop. Same amount of risk and everyone thinks of you as a hero instead of hating you.

Being a detective and solving crimes would probably be pretty interesting, but being the cop you see every day policing the streets would suck ass. And you'd have to do that for X amount of years before you could move on to something good.
