If you hear joe budden, breakfast club,hot97,rap radar etc always talk about certain artists or see these artist almost everywhere but really don't hear people listening to these artist as much as theyre always talking about them; 98% they're palnts they're probably plants . I.e: h.e.r., Jenelle monae ,moray(I think that's his name) griselda, chance , cardi b,Rick Ross,Jay z(Yea I said it). Kendrick def a plant too, but I think people actually like/listen to him
Also say what you want about AK, but he's the only one that I see thatll say XYZ is plant
Huh?

plants originally were artist that pretended to have an organic independent hype and following when they really had major label backing( Drake, Cole, Kendrick, Wiz etc)

I guess now, fans call someone a plant when the major label push doesn’t match the energy of the fans ( H.E.R., Chance)

No matter which definition you use, Jay z can’t be a plant. It’s just that if you’re a certain age in rap media you’re going to dikkride him because they believe there’s a potential he can open or close some doors for you.

AK isn’t governed by that because he isn’t from that generation.

AK, Justin LABOY and others of that gen do dikkride Drake like the previous Gen does Jay z tho

I think the HER and chance can fall into that first paragraph you said too.
And I think a plant is both.
Jayz gets alot placements & every media outlet sucking Jay off, even the amounts of people in real life that think he's the greatest is wayyyyy less than what the media presents. I remember somewhere in 06-09 I think, Jay couldn't sell a show out in Texas (Dallas I believe) and Gucci sold out in 1 day. And if you don't wanna use Gucci, use j.cole or drake, they wouldn't have problems selling out on the south, east or west

She had a real sound but the label wanted her to stay more pop after 2on. The problem is she can do anything so she does even if it really doesn’t fit her true original style. She’s super versatile which is a gift and a curse
Tell that to Doja who is both versatile and has “it” and is seeing her career climb upon every release.

Tinashe wasn’t it, outside of her fans from her mixtap run, she failed to connect to any of the 15 other target audiences she went after. That’s a sign of an artist who wasn’t meant to be.

Breh you were making sense up until you started listing examples. Griselda, a plant ? Bro Griselda been making music since the early 2000's and just got on. They're not even "mainstream" (On the radio etc).

Griselda relative commercial success and visability example:Conway on Jimmy Falon with Luda is tied to Roc Nation imo

Ofc I mean he's on Shady but these guys have been grinding from the ground up for over 15 years. A plant (IMO) is an artist that seemingly comes out of nowhere and just has a bunch of money and label push behind them with no real history.

Ella Mai doing fine without that. SZA just had an acoustic smash hit that isn’t about sex. This is perhaps one of the best times ever to be a black female artist. Nothing to do with thot music.

I’d argue it’s more to do with her not having white fans. White girls fukk with SZA, Summer Walker, Jhene Aiko, Ella Mai, etc. All these chicks have heavy social media presence, personality, and relationships. HER doesn’t have any of that. She reminds me of EP-era Tinashe. Can’t connect with people for whatever reason. Too mysterious. It worked during the SoundCloud era when she was building buzz but it’s not translating to larger audiences.

Ella Mai had two singles, that's it. It's not like she poppin now....boo'd up was a long time ago

Doja sells sex appeal and her music is more lightweight and fun. Has easily repeatable choruses, music has a more earworm quality

H.E.R is very talented, she can actually play too but yea she kinda boring...wheres the charisma/it factor....and music is kinda formulaic. She woulda did great in the early 2000s but we in that mystical thot wave. Women wanna hear about bytches being bad and doin thot shyt...being unashamed, unabashed hoes....telling your "truth". Personality will get you much farther than skill...word to Cardi B.
Nobody knows anything about HER..just that she has musical talent...but that ain't enough

They dont wanna hear manufactured protest songs or mature shyt

Vol 1 and 2 were solid, she shoulda dropped debut back after those....she waited too long and now the musical landscape changed. Also her label fukked up. I'm in LA and "Damage" still gets a good amount of spins...they shoulda dropped earlier this year

People saying her new album is trash :ohhh:

I liked it. :yeshrug: Who cares about numbers that much? Everyone isn’t gonna be Beyoncé. Gotta get in where you fit in. She’s still rich and famous.

There's video of her being a child prodigy playing the piano, drums and guitar. Her dad taught her music
