I performed in the Philly stop of the Lyricist Lounge Tour, but I'm pretty sure that day in Philly was either in '99 or even 2000. Mos Def was the headliner. I remember Master Fuol, Ali Vegas, Nature, Wordsworth, and a few other cats I'm drawing a blank on performing that night.

50 used to be pretty cool with Punch and Words. It's crazy how many people from that era and time in the indie/underground hip-hop scene ended up becoming megastars in the industry.

Yeah, he lost me with some of his later work and projects. But I'll tell you what though. Vegas was dope back then. And he eventually grew out of the Nas and Jay-Z biting, which was my biggest gripe with him.

But I give him all the props in the world for basically being a kid, probably no older than 16 or 17 that night and rocking the crowd at a venue as big as The Electric Factory. The best part was that his DJ was just as young as he was.

Two kids putting it down on the same stage around some of the best doing it during that time is nothing to yawn at. And Vegas was doing his thing on the indie tip too. He had some nice 12" singles that dropped on the Bronx Science label I remember picking up.

Was this Ali Vegas before or after Eyedea ended his career on tv?

yall talk about Eminem's lyricism, but Wordsworth(and many others) match him. Wordsworth is probably the greatest lyricist of all time that no one knows. He flows so effortlessly making every bar count. I can't find the Words and Em cypher on youtube. Then there is that great breakdown of syllables over the Pete Rock "give it to yall" Instrumental. You can't find any of this shyt on youtube for some reason but I have copies of all this on cd. That's crazy. Also can't forget him weekly on MTV's Lyricist Lounge. Words is a lyrical beast. Promotion is everything. I don't care how ill of a rapper you are or how great your albums are, if a machine will not get behind you, it's all worthless. Let's not forget, Illmatic sold nothing in 1994 and had Steve Stoute not restructured Nas' career and had singing on his hooks by Lauryn Hill, Jojo, R Kelly, and even Nas himself, while also putting him in that pink suit, his career would have been done.
Lupes a better lyricist than Em. I don't know how anyone even argued against this

Early on, Vegas was really dope.

He was pulling a little too much from Nas at the time, but in his defense, mad other MC's were too. He had the potential to really make some noise, but he got so gassed that he started in talking sh*t about the same people he was using for co-signs. Burned so many bridges that he vanished off most heads' radar after just a few years. But during his early run, he had all the talent in the world to make it.

you can tell who did drugs in here

eminem got on a different level when he was on LSD and pills during his late run
cant even compare those other dudes to him at his peak... its all documented, you cant pull a punch and/or words song that can mess with his mid level shyt at that time

eminem took a tiny bit from chino, not enough to brag about... his rhyme pattern and delivery mimicked the outsidaz the most at that same time period

if you are jumping all the way to SSLP each song had different influence and style :yeshrug: the majority of his songs from Infinite-SSLP-MMLP dont have a chinoXL stamp on them... and the radio shyt and underground label works is mostly Outsidaz
Words didn’t have Dr Dre, Jimmy Iovine, and MTV.

Or good music :stopitslime:

Words ended up like Papoose. We all know he’s extremely talented with the pen, but he just never made really good music of his own.

As for em being a “media creation” honestly they all are. Most times success/stardom is based on opportunities, chance and even a little bit of luck.

Yes em got some extra looks due to the machine behind him and being white, he’d admit that himself. But regardless of any of that dude had an all time great run in the actual music he was putting out for a time.

Both things can be true :manny:

That’s what im saying nobody makes good music on their own

You think Em would’ve made those albums if he was still doing showcases in Detroit and hanging with the Outsidaz in Jersey?

Some of his best stuff came before Dre, but i don’t have any argument against the idea that Dre was a HUGE part of his success both artistically and commercially.

I’m not familiar with any of his music before the Slim Shady EP and that first or second Soundbombing album
