The most surprising thing is Stalin was caught off guard. Stalin didn't trust anybody....not his people, not his generals, but he trusted Hitler to keep his word.

Russians caught Germans moving troops to the border and Germans told Stalin not to worry, they were just "training" for the war in the west.

George Carlin has an excellent podcast on WW2 Eastern front. The Eastern front made D-Day and the war on the western front, look like childs play.

i know that he had written of the grand plan to expand germany to the east and take over russia but stalin actually believed that the treaty was not going to be broken.
his advisors and generals told him that the germans were invading as soon as it happened but stalin brushed it off.




i saw a scene in a movie where a nazi officer is given a US mail package that was captured.
the officer opens it.
it's a cake that was mailed from america to europe.

the officer said something to the effect of "this is why we can't win. we can't fuel our tanks but they can fly cakes across the ocean."

Yep. If Nazi Germany never attacked the UK and invaded Russia in the early spring....well.....the world would have been a lot different. The Jews outside of American soil would have been wiped out, Europe would have been speaking German outside of England and Switzerland, and they would have nukes to wipe out "undesirable" cultures around the world.
