The whole thing was weird. Russia either didn't want smoke or thought Germany was really gonna be satisfied with the rest of Europe. Allies had been warning them for awhile and Germany had been moving troops to Poland under the guise of "training excercises" , still Stalin turned a blind eye.

Funny how Hitler hated communism, but his actions basically gave Stalin the Baltics and whole Soviet block in the end.

Nah pretty sure its very much against rules of war. But look at it this way, would you (
in this case the other allies) tell Russia no after their losses and the fact that they played a huge part in beating back Germany?

All of the allies did things that the others grinned and bared ( the US hated how the Brits and Russians secretly carved up eastern Europe, and Churchill hated how the Russians sat back and let the internal fighting in Poland weaken the country, then come in as basically conquerers).

That was standard British practice. They did it twice to Danes in the space of 6 years during the Napoleonic wars.
