Benigno was ranting about this earlier on WFAN.... Once I saw that part in the article that a potential hold up could be over how much autonomy Griffin would have, I had a feeling that this would happen. So I wasn't even all that shocked yesterday when I heard he withdrew his name. I'm curious what the plan of action is now. I don't see other GMs trying to be down, may as well promote H20 to GM and be done with it, so at least people are in place instead of all this uncertainty.

Weekend recap thoughts:
1. The Griffin news is what I was nervous about. The team isn't giving another GM autonomy and tbh, Phil probably woulda removed some FO guys too if he was allowed. The same cats that were around when IT mortgaged the future, Walsh gave away picks for cap space, Grunwald dumped his amnesty and Phil messed up everything...those same cats are still around and Griffin wasn't allowed to dump them.

2. It makes me even more skeptical on the THJ signing and timing...Right as the Griffin talks heat up, the Knicks stand-in president uses up ALL of the available cap space with no Melo or Lee trade immediately after to regain some financial flexibility. Hate or love the signing, the timing is sketchy.

3. DSJ looks as good as we expected and it has zero to do with the Knicks. We can freak out if Frank looks completely awful when he actually plays but don't let drama queens trigger you.

4. I'd have rather landed Alan Williams and/or Shabbazz Muhammad for cheaper and shorter than take the risk on THJ...but he's here and I'm hoping for the best. He looked good the second half of the regular season and I hope his work ethic stays high. I have reasons for being skeptical but I'm not gonna beat everyone up with those thoughts, let's watch to see how the kid does. He's making second option money, KP is gonna be the focal point...let's hope they both improve with the bigger roles.

5. I like Rondo's IQ, competitiveness and vision for this team as a cheap vet mentor type. He's one of the most cerebral players in the league who Rivers used to let draw up plays on time outs...he's got a coaching mentality. For all the attitude talk, he showed out for the kids in Chicago and stood up to Butler and Wade for those youngsters (if you've never read his "my vets" instagram post directed at those two, peep it)...we could use a guy like that.

At this point,

My free agency wish list:

Youth:
Tyler Ennis(PG) and KJ McDaniels(defense).

As crazy as it sounds, if he were embarrassed enough to abandon ring chasing after his finals performance, I'd inquire about Deron Williams as a veteran presence at PG.

Good ideas, I didn't think about possibly signing Deron Williams, he'd be a great mentor if he decided to sign on :leon::leon::leon:

Knicks still need a vet PG at the spot to ease Frank in. Seems like knicks will take it slow with him.

I like all those things about Rondo but the possibility that he can flip and ruin the entire team chemistry is enough of a reason to not take that risk.

Also if Knicks trade Melo I think they should just stick to the "youth movement" and make the entire 2017-18 season an experiment where all the young players can grow and make mistakes.

They'll tank and maybe get a few more nice pieces in next years draft and can decide what Free Agents to go for in summer 2018 based on how this upcoming season goes.

In addition, Hardaway has improved nearly every aspect of his game to go along with better shooting. His on/off court statistics reflect this gain, since the Hawks have played better with him on the floor in 2016-17. Atlanta has a offensive rating of 108.4 and a defensive rating of 103.0 with Hardaway playing. Without him, the numbers shift to 97.4 and 103.7, respectively. The most significant number is the offensive rating. The defense has been about the same without or without Hardaway, but the offense takes a major hit when he is on the bench.

When one considers that the Hawks as a team have a negative net rating, the fact that Atlanta posts a positive rating of 5.4 with Hardaway playing is significant. The sample size for this statistic is somewhat smaller since he normally doesn’t play starters’ minutes, but over the course of a full season it still stands out. From shooting to defense, Hardaway has become a much more valuable player than he was last season.

From Mid year. He was showing promise regarding his improvements.

Can you guys help us understand which stats show the best idea of defensive ability?

I think the Knicks deserved to be clowned for offering up a huge deal with no GM in place. It is the kind of move that drives away applicants. On top of that, news that the Knicks wouldn't let him install his staff, or give him final say on basketball decisions is insane. What job does he hold, then?

The team isn't looking for a general manager, they just want somebody to sit at the desk, and take the blame if/when it all falls to shyt.

I also hope Hardaway makes a huge leap, and turns into a player. But at $17 million dollars, the likelihood that his deal has surplus value is almost nonexistent.

On top of everything, the signing also the latest example of how this team does not give a fukk about defense.

At least he's young and not hurt? Hopefully they can stick with that mantra, filling out the rest of the roster.
