the difference is that Kendrick is catering to a younger audience(though he's almost 40). Nothing about Kendrick's last album relates to the G funk era. Absolutely nothing!! It's inspired by trap/hyphy music. And that's the problem with hip hop today. If you aren't doing trap music, you're placed in a box that you've got to replicate your best album. Why people want to see 40-60 year old men doing trap music is beyond my knowledge.
Don't forget, some people were bashing 2001 as well when it dropped in 1999 because they wanted another Chronic. We all know what people said about Nas' It was Written and even EPMD got fukked up by some critics for Business Never Personal, and I believe that is one of their top 2 albums. Everybody aint gonna like your shyt. I say I just drop it and hope half of your fanbase accepts it. We are living in the 2 week era of music. Your album drops, people talk about for 2 weeks and move on to the next FREE album. Cuz 99.99999% of people aint paying for shyt. That .00001 % that still buy vinyl and cds aren't a factor in what's hot.
