His writing catalog might be better than the music he sang. That's one dude that used the Motown Machine and didn't let it use him. Proof that if you know how to write music, make it sound good AND can do your own performing.....you're set.

The greatest and most successful artists ever were always the ones who stepped away from the recording studio and put in that real work to learn everything including writing, producing, instrumentation, and performing. These are the guys whos music careers last, and they still get work and got bank 50 years later. These are the truly passionate people.

When an artist has no further interest in music other than walking in the booth and singing his lines--cant even be assed to express his own words through his music--you already know this a scrub who's not passionate about music, they're passionate about being a pop star and their music career will only go so far.
