Her voice was nothing special. Woman was propped up because Berry Gordy was crazy about her. He all but came right out and said this in his autobiography. Had her in movies and everything. She couldn't 'not sing'. Her voice was just mediocre.

Let me put it this way. I'd put her voice on the level of Otis Williams in the Temptations. He can sing but he isn't David, Eddie or Paul. He also wasn't a female. So he wasn't about to get propped up because head honchos want a chance to smash.
