I always assumed he died later from his wound and being out in the wilderness and freezing cold.

Ralph and Richie were not respected by anyone, when the beef over the stripper Tracy happened, Ralph went to Johnny Sack abouy switching families and maybe killing Tone, Johnny said you might as well commit suicide because Carmine the head of the family does not know your name, Ralph was in florida doing coke while these guys were making it big. Ralph was good earning money for the family, but he had no respect whatsoever. Richie the same thing, he couldn't sell Allie boy Baressi to go against Tony, Junior said he was a loser also.
