Should successful black role models live in and serve the community in the hood?

If you can afford to get out the hood, regardless if your single or have a family, do it. You want the best for self and family. That "keepin it real" b.s. Is for the birds. I remember Rhyme and Reason, Ice T and Eiht was like "hell nah, I'm getting my family out the killing fields". And what's with this serving shyt? What do you mean, like setting up programs?

One way you can serve is by just being in a nieghborhood, acting as role model for what others cant aspire to. If you're a doctor and you work in a black neighborhood, other kids can look up to you as a realistic path in life vs what some of their peers are doing.

Nah, you have the power to DEMAND that they have to get rid of the drug dealers and bums BEFORE you invest in the community as a whole. Put ECONOMIC PRESSURE on the hard headed people to move out the way or make people go to the libraries again and READ self-improvement books.

Tough decision .... I would stay if I hit the big time and had no security issues.

Former baseball star Danny Clyburn Jr. killed by lifelong friend who accused player of not giving enough money back to hometown
  • Tampa Bay Devil Rays player Danny Clyburn was shot once in the heart following an argument on February 7, 2012 in Lancaster, South Carolina
  • His friend, Derrick McIlwain, was arrested for the killing and later admitted to murder, saying that Clyburn 'never did anything for anybody in the hood' after he started playing professional baseball
  • McIlwain's charge was changed to involuntary manslaughter and he pleaded guilty
  • On Friday he was sentenced to 15 years prison, causing more grief for Clyburn's family

depends on how bad the hood is and ones own status inside the microcosmos. the hoods (here or in the usa or russia etc.) are full of criminal minded part time sociopaths aka drug dealers, thiefs, junkies etc. imagine running around and not everyone likes you the same and the crab in the bucket thing makes you a target of jelousy and hate. or a junkie in fiend mode doesn't recognize you and kills you.

also, what about your kids? wife?

save you and your own first, lift up the hood instead. donations, being at sports events, organizing events, sponsorship, rolemodel at school, church etc.

its a tough decision, i would move out. also, my hood is being gentrified right now so there won't be any in 10-15 years

I feel the brehs talking about having kids, shyt changes a bit once that's a factor, but thread got me thinking... I mean we've far too often how the hood can become gentrified, the poor get driven out and suddenly it aint "the hood" anymore... white people see an opportunity and "danger" or not, they'll capitalize on it. Why couldn't middle/upper class blacks do the same and re-solidify the community? Just throwing that out for discussion's sake. :manny:

Good point, I think we just aren't taught a development mentality, I think another side point is that you don't have to actually live in the hood, you can buy property and run a business in the hood without living there

Yeah... Not gonna let black pride get in the way of common sense. You can't even walk through the hood with your brand new pair of Jordans without getting stuck up so why should the ones that have made it put themselves and their families at risk for being robbed, shot kidnapped and/or killed over material possessions & money due to envy.

The hood will get better when the hood wants to do better.

Nah breh. fukk I look like trying to better myself and being smack dab in the middle of the hood? :stopitslime:
This is an interesting question though, because on one hand I want to do whatever I can to uplift the community, but at the same time I don't know if me living there would allow for that. Jealousy and envy are big issues in the inner city breh and if you got money in these areas the wolves are gonna come for your neck. Having said that I think doing outreach and participating in big brother programs would be beneficial.

No one says rich white people who have "made it" should go back to the trailer park

Obviously, this. Going back to a larger discussion, why is it that Black people in general always seem to have this need for leaders/role models etc. I don't hear Whites, Arabs, Asian etc talking about that? Or do they?

Anyways IF a black successfull person wants to open a business for example, yeah it would be cool if they considered doing it in their community as opposed to some other random place, but if he/she doesn't who's in any kind of position to blame them? Maybe such a person is more of an inspiration if they actually show that it's possible to get out? I've never lived in the hood, lived a couple years in a kind of run-down area and I have no idea why anyone who's made it out would want to go back.

First paragraph dead on. I guess that's because of the lack of fathers in these communities. I wouldn't go back either, last resort. You can GIVE back but I'm not living around liquor stores, side shows, crack houses, etc just so I can keep it real. Look man, when BUYING a house the areas to look for are the ones with GOOD schools. Many times, those places are mostly white and Asian. Living in a gentrified area means it's in the turn around stage, but it's gonna take some years. Personally, I'm trying to get as far as possible from that bull.
