I don't know if any of you remember, but there's a long running theory that Lan Di killed Ryo's father only because Ryo's father killed Lan Di's father. If true, it would make Ryo's quest kind of redundant. In the first game they mention that Ryo's father was very close to Lan Di's father. They even show a picture that many (I did as well) think is Ryo and Lan Di's father together like best friends.

Maybe not in the form of "kickstarters", but you're naive if you don't think they are scheming something at this very moment in the same breadth. The bottom line is the most important thing to these companies at the end of the day and if there is anyway they can raise that number they will explore the option.

I just disagree that one lil Asian man getting 3 milli plus for an anticipated game is going to be the catalyst for it.

Companies been scheming and its started with F2P, micro transactions, DLC, season passes and pre order culture. Stuff that popped up last gen. They have been moving to the games as a service model for a while now.

Thank you, I'm glad some people understand. N1ggas wan't to act like this is a far fetched idea. This industry will see the profit in this and start doing this for known titles that will sell, so less money on there end. Or they will start to nerf the rewards of what your donations get you. I can see how they would start saying things like for $100 you will get the game pre release date with a a signature on it, and people will go nuts over it not realizing they paid $100 for a $60 video game. Come up shuffle for developers.

:what: What in the world do you think pre-orders are. Gamers have been buying games months, if not a full year before the release date just to get a free sticker and 2 costume DLC packs. This hypothetical situation you guys are talking about has been a reality for over 5 years.

I know what preorders are, I'm saying the ROI is going to continue to diminish to laughable levels parried with the notion that we can only make this game if you give us start up money. It's a dangerous territory no matter how you look at it, and you foolish if you don't think it is

The situation you painted, word for word, is what is going on today.

I'm not saying that the practice isn't a problem. What I'm pointing out is that you're painting this as some sort of hypothetical " I could see this happening one day" when it has already been happening for over 5 years.

Yu Suzuki Plans to Add More Funding Tiers to Shenmue III; If The Fans don’t Like it, There Won’t be a IV

Shenmue III Creator Yu Suzuki is posting an AMA on Reddit, and he gave some interesting answers on the upcoming game and on the future of the series.

First of all, to the question on whether he plans to add more funding tiers to the Kickstarter, his answer was brief but clear, so if you want to spend more than $500, but less than $3000, options are coming.

“Yes.”

Secondly, if you hope for Shenmue IV, you better hope that IIIwill be well received:

“If the fans are not happy with 3 there will not be a 4. So I please hope we can together make this game the best it can be.”

Interestingly, Suzuki san also gave the following answer on whether Ryo will ever return to Japan, possibly hinting to content that could come within a sequel.

“Not in 3.”

To the question on whether more arcade games will be added within Shenmue III, Suzuki-san’s answer was slightly cryptic.

“I plan on making plans.”

Suzuki-san also answered on which one was his favorite Sega console. I doubt anyone will be surprised here:

“The Dreamcast. It has really good balance. I was involved with the hardware as well, so it had a lot of meaning for me.”

He also gave an interestingly philosophical answer on why he creates:

“Why does one climb the mountain?

The shark cannot breath when it does not swim.”

If you want to contribute to the Kickstarter campaign, you can do so here. At the moment of this writing, the game has received $3,378,626 in pledges.

Right but you gotta remember these are developers with no company. Its not like EA is doing a Kickstarter for Madden 2016. This is a game that japanese video game companies were afraid to support and thats why the series has been in limbo for years.

So officially, the game needs 10 million for the full Shenmue experience.

Y'all got work to do :francis:

Lan Di is gonna escape again?
No, Lan di is supposably a part of a group that has a total of like 5 main bosses. Back in the day, the rumor was that the shenmue series would span about 6 games because once ryo discovers the group he makes it his mission to go after each member and lan di would be the last.

http://segabits.com/blog/2015/06/20...-shenmue-3-secrets-and-details-in-reddit-ama/

Last night Yu Suzuki held a Reddit AMA, revealing even more Shenmue 3 details for fans. While the event itself was initially confusing, failing to mention if the event was 9:30 AM or PM, what time zone it was in, and where on Reddit it could be found, eventually everything was sorted and the AMA took place at/r/IAMA. Suzuki answered several questions pertaining to the length of the game, how many chapters the entire Shenmue saga would cover, potential gameplay elements, and more. Most interestingly, he laid out the exact numbers he hopes the Kickstarter will hit to make the game not only a reality, but as close to his vision as possible:

I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality. At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world.

After the break, check out a full breakdown of what Suzuki revealed about Shenmue 3!

The following comes from the SEGAbits Forums Shenmue 3 topic and was written by forum membercrackdude:

  • Yu Suzuki is considering accepting PayPal donations after the project is funded.
  • Apparently Shenmue is now down to eleven chapters.
  • The story will span 4-5 games.
  • The day/night/weather cycles from the previous games will of course be in the new one.
  • Ryo’s face from the trailer is not what we’ll see in the final version. Yu Suzuki isn’t happy it with it yet.
  • Shenmue III will feature a more user friendly interface.
  • No decision has been made on what the capsule toys will be.
  • There will be a Japanese dub for Shenmue III.
  • Yu Suzuki didn’t tell the story of Shenmue in book form so that it wouldn’t ruin the story if he were ever able to complete the game. However, he did consider it.
  • Shenmue’s story was inspired by Yu Suzuki’s trips to China when he was location hunting when designing Virtua
  • Fighter. Our first mention of a retro game this AMA.
  • Practicing moves and the FREE battle system will return in Shenmue III.
  • Yu Suzuki is considering allowing players to have access to both English and Japanese voice overs in the game, but he hasn’t decided.
  • Yu Suzuki is considering putting a special option in the game where Ryo’s face bandage could be removed.
  • Yu Suzuki would like to bring the journal back and will look into it.
  • Yu Suzuki believes that the popularity of mobile games in the Japanese market is causing game budgets to decrease, making it harder for designers to express their vision. His hope is that the console and PC markets will gain in popularity to reverse this trend.
  • Shenmue III might contain something like a 1 horsepower bike. Perhaps an actual horse?
  • The essence of an arcade game is that there is only a 3 minute window to express what the game is.
  • Something resembling a co-op or vs. mode is being considered for Shenmue III.
  • In Shenmue III the “Rapport System” will govern changes in Shenhua’s actions depending on your conversations with or actions towards her. The “Character Perspective System” will highlight different characters personalities as they go through the story.
  • Shenmue III will contain part time jobs. It’s hinted at the stretch goals may include the forklift job. Edit: Now confirmed.
It looks we’ll get the most complete version of Shenmue III if the $10 million mark is hit.
  • Akira would defeat Ryo in a fight.
  • Possible return of duck racing.
  • Yu Suzuki declines to reveal whether or not Ryo will ever use a sword.
  • Yu Suzuki answers one of my questions. “I had fun making all the games I worked on, and can’t say one was better than another.”
  • Shenmue is set in the 80s instead of the present day to “put forward the differences in culture and values between the two periods.”
  • Yu Suzuki’s favorite song from Shenmue is the Tomato Mart theme.
  • Expect more funding tiers for the Kickstarter, in particular between the $500 and $3000 mark.
  • Shenmue IV is contingent on fans liking Shenmue III. “If the fans are not happy with 3 there will not be a 4. So I please hope we can together make this game the best it can be.”
  • Dreamcast is Yu Suzuki’s favorite console.
  • When directly asked if arcade games will return in Shenmue III, Yu Suzuki responds, “I plan on making plans.” Very ambiguous. Possible yes?
  • Why does Yu Suzuki create? “Why does one climb the mountain? The shark cannot breath when it does not swim.”
  • Yu Suzuki has three Yorkshire terriers and a turtle as pets.
  • Sega would be responsible for any remasters and re-releases of Shenmue I and II.
  • Details about Chobu and Bailu villages.
  • The villages mentioned in the stretch goal are already in the game. The stretch goals are to add extras to them. Not to add the villages.
  • Ryo may one day return to Japan, but it won’t be in Shenmue III.

Speaking to Eurogamer's Oli Welsh last week, Sony's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida provided a little more clarity on the relationship. "I cannot talk about the specifics of the deal, but I can talk about the set-up," he said. "It's the third-party relations team's work. They've been supporting many indie developers - you've seen Adam Boyes or Shahid Ahmad showcasing indie developers over the last few years. When the third party relations team identifies some great indie game being developed they strike a deal so it comes on PlayStation first on console, or something like that.

"There's a variety of ways of support, including financial support. When the game's not being funded at that point, the developer has to come up with some funding themselves, for third party relations team to help - because third party relations is third party relations - if we fund the project then it's first party! It's my job! There's a great difference. If Suzuki's Kickstarter is successful [and very quickly after our conversation it was], SCEA will add funding and other support."

Shu in regards to funding of Shenmue.
