Can I be honest here...

This is really underhanded, Sony is in the gaming business. They know what the fans want, instead of putting there money into something they believe in they do some BS kickstarter to soften the blow.... A 2 million kicker start with a 2 day goal of 2 million...that now has stretch goals...come on man.

Can you imagine if wal mart ask people two donate money to getting more cashiers in Line even though it's clear the people want that... People would be insulted. How you in the business, but asking fans for money to gauge interest....talking about it couldn't happen other wise. Your a million dollar company you dont kickstart games. Kickstarter is for the complete opposite of that...

My big fear now is that everyone is just gonna do this, "hey you want a game... If you prove you want it buy getting X amount of money in such and such time we'll back it".:skip:

The fact that the for a millon more dollars you get DLC added on to the game :pachaha:

I really want Shenmue but I might not support this off GP.
Shut the fukk up.

If it leads to hardcore gamers getting the niche games they've been dying for, what exactly is the problem?

People always talking about "I'd give my left arm for xyz game" well now is the chance to prove it.

Sony (and other sources, apparently) are still gonna provide funding for this, but you cant ignore the fact that neither Shenmue game made money.

Other companies have been doing the same thing with remasters, gauging interest by releasing an updated version of an old game. "You pay 30-60 dollars for a game you already beat, and if the profits are high enough we'll consider a sequel." :smugfarve:

Houston to LA like I'm Robert Horry.
People going to think this is all good until you have multi-million dollar companies trying to do the same thing with games they KNOW they can fund and make a profit on. :francis:

Gamers have to be some of the worst consumers out there when it comes to letting these companies skate by with minimal effort. Want an example? Look no further than DLC. Scust.

I'm not a fan of rich people asking for donations, and I dont support remasters unless its a multiplayer game or a game I haven't played before....or something really really old like ps2 or older. I just dont like what this could start, and I really dont like the fact that a million dollar company took donations from kickstarter to soften the blow of final responsibility.

But Yu Suzuki is not rich tho?

Its his kick starter, sony advertised it and basically said well provide some funding if you meet your goal.

You're not giving money to Sony, you're giving money to YS so he can show sony that there is a real, tangible demand for the product. Not just internet hyperbole

This line of thinking doesn't make sense to me.

Anybody you ask Shenmue is the most requested game. Sony themselves said that they get asked about shenmue the most out of everything. Phil spencer said the same.

They didn't need a kickstarter to prove demand. Publishers are reluctant to fully fund it, because the return on investment won't be high. These funds are being used to reduce risk and increase profits for all parties involved. Don't let the PR lines fool you.

I find it hard to believe sony didn't realize there was demand for the game, they knew there was enough hype and demand for the game that they were willing to give it time on there main E3 stage. If it was presented some other way, you could argue they just weren't sure.

But a trailer and time on the E3 stage.. They knew the fans wanted Shenmue. And taking donations doesn't prove any kind of interest or give any kind of real gauge on how well the game will sell or ho many people want it when you got over 4 people that donated 10k alone.

It was a cash grab, and it continues to be one.

The 1st game cost like 40 million to make.... getting a 2 million jump start isn't going to get anything done. Now if they can get up to 5 or 8 million plus. That's a nice chunk of change for literally no reason...

So if the funding is coming from the people, should the game be free?

I don't see how reasonable it is to ask people to fund the game and then still charge the retail price.

The funding is going to come from sony it seems, it has too unless multiple other companies are involved, shenmue cost 40 million to make, back then...so its no way they are going to get this done on 2 million alone.... they just need money from the people (2 million) to prove that there was interest in the game is what sony is saying.

If you donate 29 bucks you'll get a digital copy free.

If not you have to by it when it drops..

Right now they are at 3 or 4 million off straight donations. Instead of closing the kickstarter they have stretch goals now...

lol even if the kick starter gets to 5 million, you really think that's gonna put a major dent in what the game development and marketing will cost?

Im not gonna lie and say it doesn't help YS (somewhat), but that's not the main objective. I (as well as others)were saying this the night it happened (before the sony article came out)that it was to show that there is demand (in order to get higher ups to sign off)

4 things to remember

-demand is not what people say, its what they are willing to pay

-Sony doesn't own this ip, so Sega will make money off top, decreasing the potential profit that sony could make (if any)

-the game is 14 years old, its dead, and even when it was alive, it wasn't financially viable ( I'd argue it should have appeared on ps2 but :yeshrug:). Anybody could've funded it, there's a reason why it hasn't been.

-Sony has nabbed other Kickstarter games (that met there goals), helped with funding/development, and will give royalties up front for exclusivity (Pub fund program)

You're a fool if you don't think the CEO's of EA, Activision, etc. didn't look at this and say ":leon: oh word let's see how we can take advantage of these suckers doing something similar:heh:"
They already are. That's what the entire pre-ordering scam has been this whole time. Pay for a game a year before it even comes out and we'll throw you 2 free DLC costumes and a 30 day trial of xbox live/ps+.
