I remember seeing this like three days before my 8th grade graduation, it was kind of a big deal, all of us riding that kind of high that comes with the last week of school.

But, the 2000 version was raw, esp as a 14 year old, hard edged violence, and yes, some comedic moments, but also some stomach churning and brutal racial violence, (Omar Epps beaten with a metal pole) with "Whoa" making a cameo, and Busta Rhymes too, it had the rap/street feel, plus the big budget trappings of any late 90's NYC "gritty" cop thriller.

The acting, from Jeffery Wright, to Jackson, to an oily and dangerous Upper Eastwide sleaze, in Christain Bale was top notch. Yeah, it plays a little by the numbers at age 33, but most of that stuff does.

This one, to me, looks too cute and too silly to have any real menace, or any real substance. It looks cartoonish and oddly out of step in that bizarre misogyny scene. Probably wouldn't see in theaters.

Facts

Peoples Hernandez played by Jeffrey Wright is one of the most underrated performances of all time!
