I felt like this study which came out this fall is very relevant to the achievement gap:
Language gap between rich and poor children begins in infancy, Stanford psychologists find
Research by Stanford psychologists reveals that 2-year-old children of lower-income families may already be six months behind in language development. Future work aims to devise intervention methods.

Fifty years of research has revealed the sad truth that the children of lower-income, less-educated parents typically enter school with poorer language skills than their more privileged counterparts. By some measures, 5-year-old children of lower socioeconomic status score more than two years behind on standardized language development tests by the time they enter school.
Stanford researchers have now found that these socioeconomic status (SES) differences begin to emerge much earlier in life:
By 18 months of age, toddlers from disadvantaged families are already several months behind more advantaged children in language proficiency.
The study, published in Developmental Science, is the first to identify an "achievement gap" in language processing skill at such a young age and could inform strategies to intervene and bring children up to speed.

To me, this is a clear cut issue that parents can address. I know a child (rich Asian parents) who at 3 years old knows what a line segment, angle and octagon are. He can read kids books already. I watched another kid's parents (rich too - white dad/asian mom) explain to their 3 year old kid in detail how a car works (engine, gasoline, energy, brakes, etc). Both kids have traveled to both coasts already. One has traveled outside of the country on several occasions.
I was really impressed to see the level of intellectual engagement that they gave to their children. It made me realize that I can't slack at all. My babies are going to get schooled. No baby talk. Real adult vocabulary and explanations of the way the world works.
My parents didn't do all that. They did a solid job for sure but these wealthy families are on some other shyt.
