They took the closest thing they had to a real Austin successor and pissed it away. It caused a ripple effect that we're still reeling from today.
Has to be one of the greatest fumbles ever by the WWE

CM Punk was on fire.

His MIB crowd reaction still gives me goosebumps

I think creative would’ve handled the situation a bit better now. However, it wouldn’t be as compelling bc Cena is on the decline.

This shyt was surprising because it happened during peak Super Cena, legit didn’t know who was going to win.

I think it was the first time we saw them deliberately and blatantly sabotage the hottest name on the roster because he wasn’t what they wanted. The noise that crowd made when he started shouting at them while standing on the second rope during his entrance was fukking deafening.

Definitely, CM Punk could have been the 1B to Cena, much like how they wanted Randy to be.

Punk had the mic skills, charisma and ring ability to have a legit run as the guy

Pretty sure he mentioned this on air too. Said something along the lines of he’s getting them the attention Vince craves and only gets when there’s a steroid scandal or when somebody dies.

If punk goes over, then it makes sense and works since there’s room to build towards a face vs heel boss figure angle that actually has reason to exist, but even more egregious was them taking the belt off him at summerslam, having him lose the #1 contenders match, losing the triple threat at hell in a cell, and eating the pin in the tag match vs miz and truth. At the same time they manage to make ADR look like a paper champ and their title match at survivor series doesn’t close the show, and by that point has no heat at all. What a shytshow :snoop:

Do you remember when that promo took place? Been looking for it.

Also yeah Punk basically got screwed by the "Once In A Lifetime" match being established already.

Check 7/5/2011 or maybe the week before. The go home show on 7/12/2011 was the one where he ripped up the contract and talked about how Cena became what he hates.

LMAO @ some of yall think that mess was a shoot. He didn't even say anything to Trippa Laych that was new. He basically recited smarky-neck beard shyt from the internet. One of, if not THE, most overrated moment in wrestling.

Oh Punk was definitely 1B to Cena for a little more than a year. That was what drove Punk mad and "forced" him to turn heel and eventually just give up and quit.

John Cena and CM Punk would have been our Rock and Austin of our era.

Both of these dudes were equally as popular and put on classic matches every time they were in the ring together.

Weather WWE wants to admit it or not. They ran Punk out the business. And it’s a damn shame..

He didn't get screwed by once in a lifetime..he just wasn' big enough to be ahead of it. The ratings didn't lie. But he did get short cutted by the Cripple H match and the weird Nash feud post cash in.

It was limited because Punk coming back after a "THIS IS REAL!" angle was always gonna be underwhelming

No it was not.
If that was the case then, any time WWE popped it would have never happened. As wwe's boom is based around the moment of some real world anything trickling over to the WWE. Even if imaginary, if it happened outside or inside the WWE it still guages or creates a draw. As wwe's boom is from the perception of a fake wrasslin character encountering and besting before bedlam the mythical white boxing character being able to fictionally hang with the best BLACK BOXING TALENT. while alternatively the best wrassler typically never has any black wrasslin talent if at all ever. Plus, boxing talent in the real world that is black has to amplify said boom the next time as well. So, what you are saying is not true at all.

You said it to be coy. Yet it is not true. As every WWE boom has been based on a fake shoot.
or the principals of what if a fake shoot or happenstance.
took place in any capacity with real inring squared circle hof competitors.

I think you probably gotta go back before that. I think his momentum started when he was injured doing commentary.

Imo, punk's momentum started in the indy's. It is just the WWE is scared to make stars from the threat of not monetizing said draw. That when an already drawing potential great comes along. They have no idea and no real actual anything besides hoping there is a black ringsports guy in the mainstream to amplify their promotion from perception. That WWE wants an incoming black inring sports star to get their csrni funk on them. Yet the WWE does not want to give any of their carni funky ass rub to individual draws that in turn are talent that could amplify their carni funk ass draw in return. Company is the punk ass little fish bullshyt low quality territory trying to siphon off Canadians in stampede to stay a float outside their asinine booked product in the ne. Like real talk,...
If there is no Mr t and no rocky. Two things vkm has no respect for but needed. We would not be talking bout no cot damn WWE.

WWE is just a pos racist carni company that got lucky an Oscar property was visionary enough to invest in a sequel based trilogy and wanted to do it right from every direction from sound to character to theatrics.

If not for that, we do not know wtf wwf is. WWf is the company that tried to bury all the good talent it had or ever had and still to this day has no vision. Just luck, is what separated it from the others.

Punk and Bryan honestly should have been this era's Rock and Austin or Hogan Macho man...but then not being 6ft 5 and jacked made wwe not push them properly

They missed out on another silver to golden era
