It’s pretty unbelievable that they’d just halfway cut up their A team, but not completely like the quote said. Them not going for Doc (yet) doesn’t make sense either

I’m fully behind equality, but promoting Doris to that spot when A. She isn’t as entertaining as JVG B. She seems to have good chemistry with big word mulatto breh C. YOU DIDNT HAVE TO FIRE JVG is also confounding. To not get Doc AND fire Jeff would make me believe something was up
Not unbelievable and not shocking at all if the theory proves right. NFL telling ESPN to suspend their own employee because they didn't like what Bill Simmons was saying showed all you'll ever need to know

The mouse pays the light bill on it but they don't "own" it. The leagues own ESPN and anybody they don't want covering their sport won't

The mouse could if they really wanted to do so. They just choose not to interfere with ESPN endeavors outside of layoffs and potential lawsuit issues. In fact, they've done it before with someone like Jaws who ESPN wanted to bring back after laying him off and they told him no.

They throw their weight around with everyone else, so I highly doubt they'd be scared of the sports leagues.

The interesting thing about JVG and ESPN/NBA is that they've allowed people to talk shyt about their sport for years on that network, so I highly doubt that was the main reason they got rid of him.

The McAfee move has disaster written all over it. One of the main selling points of his show was it was on YouTube and he could say pretty much anything he wanted. Now I’m seeing a bunch of his loyal followers calling him a sellout and shifting on him at every opportunity.

He like Rogan also appeal heavily to the young MAGA crowd so taking the show to “woke” Disney seems dumb as hell to me.

It was also on Mad Dog Radio on Sirius which has a substantial audience. I don’t see how being on Sirius was not selling out but ESPN is.

Mad Dog replaced Pat with Danny Kannell and Dusty Dovorcic…two people who openly talk shyt about the covid vaccine on air…

Disney is the epitome of what McAfee’s primary demo hates…

To be honest I never understood ESPN bringing in Todd McShay in the 1st place when you already have the Godfather in Mel Kiper

It never made any sense at all and was the epitome of redundancy. Whoever greenlit that was just dumb.

They didn’t need him at all
I stopped listening to Kiper after his Jimmy Clausen meltdown. :russ:

Maybe the national sports radio show concept is played out
we're a marginalized country.

Dudes in NY ain't tryna hear about how the Cowboys can make a run at the NFC East or whether Alabama can make it to the college playoff. Someone in Bootyfondle, TN doesn't care about LeBron's legacy on a December evening.

More like the hot take format is played out. No one wants to hear topics about MJ being overrated, or how football players from the past couldn't play in today's game. When it comes to ESPN we want 24/7 sports and sports highlights. It also doesn't help that the sports specific networks are doing it better than ESPN.

I don’t think dudes in NYC ever wanted to hear that, it just in 2003 there was no podcast alternatives :mjlol:

we didn't have to hear it. We've always prided ourselves in our local coverage. Podcasts in some ways have damaged local radio now because much of those personalities who used to be on WFAN have moved on and even those local shows are more digestible as a pod.

ESPN has struggled for years to have a good booth since Tirico left for NBC. They had to overpay for Buck and Aikman for that reason alone. It’s no surprise MNF schedule has been better since they arrived there. NFL definitely cares about the top crew on each network and they want them to be top end.

Van Gundy "firing" feels more like he just didn't want to negotiate a lower salary for his job. Feels like they told him renegotiate or we will just terminate your contract and he probably was like :unimpressed: and walked out. Dude spent the last two years not giving a fukk about his job. He'd be talking about all kinds of shyt other than basketball. And half the time he was talking about basketball it was shytting on the nba and particularly the refs.

Anybody remember that game when his voice was so hoarse he could barely talk? Imagine your job being to talk on tv and you show up to work barely able to do even that :mjlol:

Everyday there's new cuts at ESPN that completely surprise me.

I'm not sure what their plan is at all.

I'm actually starting to believe Stephen A Smith when he says that he could be gone because they're literally getting rid of the top guys in every single area of the company. It almost feels as if they may reach the point where they just bet on up and coming talent to pay them less money.
