Who made it cool? I'm not sure what you mean by that, but black people in America have been advocating self reliance/separation since the 1800s. The one who had the largest impact IMO was Garvey. Elijah Muhamad and Malcolm X's father were members of the UNIA. Kwame Nkrumah, Jomo Kenyatta, and Ida B Wells Barnett also heavily supported Garvey and the UNIA.
I'm working on a thread now about Garvey because I don't think black people really understand the impact the UNIA had globally. It's just my opinion but if we follow his blueprint, we can end white supremacy.
