It wasn't just Puff. To put in perspective, Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad are 80's albums. Songs from both were being sampled in the 90's. Think "Human Nature" and "Liberian Girl" alone.

It's lame as fukk beyond being just a nostalgia grab

Sampling 70s records in the 90s meant you had access to string sections, horns, brass and all kinds of sounds you would never be able to recreate without tons of resources

Sampling 00s records in the 20s means you're looping up Fruity Loops presets and cheap stock VST sounds which can be easily recreated even with an app on your phone

It's pathetic
Yeah and they would often hire a session to play the bass line and mpc drums always have a better swing because they're not perfectly quantized

LOL. Puffy and Mase are literally rapping over "The Message" on the same album. Not only just the beat, but they even used the same hook just added and took away some words. This wasn't the only example. There are plenty of hit songs from the 90's where another rapper sampled another rapper and we still knew which songs it was. We loved the music, but it was still "rapping over another nikkas rap song". "Foxy's Bells" isn't an album cut that lift's LL Cool J's "Rock The Bells".
Ice cube also rapped on that same beat, but they were basically doing a cover, which is still better than a cheap fl studio version of the original beat. Even the songs like no money mo problems get a pass, cuz they looped the original intro ,not the main melody and layered with vocal chops from a different part of the song and the bass line is actually a rendition of eye of the tiger

That's not a cover. Its an entirely different song that sampled another song. There is no way you can spin that to be dismissive of what's being done here.

I still remember Ashanti's debut was her sampling popular rap songs that weren't even 10 years old.

i remember back in the 90-00s puffy sampling all the old cuts and all the old people saying how rap had no new ideas, just rehash old shyt.

Now i listen to the radio and feel like the current generation has no new ideas, just rehash old shyt.

But rappers have been this for ages and they weren't homages. Master P made an art of it.

Happened to get curious about some cheeks I saw on Twitter, so I went to this Diamond The Body chick’s IG, and apparently she’s a rapper and of course is running with the lazy sample trend :mjlol: :mjlol: They’re not even trying
