It's because of how he died.
If he'd died a normal, less-salacious death, he'd be mentioned up there with Frank Sinatra or Nat King Cole.
It's hard to reconcile his image prior to this death with that of the man accused of trying to rape a bytch in a hotel, only to get shot while trying to attack another middle-aged woman and then found dead naked with one shoe on.
Of course, that's probably not what happened. But, that's the official story until someone proves otherwise.

I don't put those guys in the same class with Sam Cooke, mainly because Sam wrote most of his own songs. Jackie didn't really write shyt, although he did with Berry Gordy before Berry founded Motown.
Otis just covered a bunch of Sam Cooke songs for the most part.
Marvin's influence as an artist was not as widespread as Sam Cooke's.
If I were to create a few tiers of soul artists, it would probably look something like this:
1st tier: Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin
2nd tier: Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Donny Hathaway, Otis Redding
3rd tier: David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Johnnie Taylor, Bobby Womack
4th tier: James Carr, OV Wright

The Asian woman, who turned out to be a prostitute, probably colluded with the hotel manager to rob him. shyt went left and he ended up dead.

Obviously, Stevie Wonder, Mayfield and Smokey Robinson aren’t better singers than Marvin Gaye, Al Green or David Ruffin.
Look at my list and judge it based on artistry and influence and I think you’ll see why it makes sense.
