In the late 80s he wrote a book called The Satanic Verses which many in the Muslim world considered blasphemous for its references to Muhammad and depictions of his wives as prostitutes. Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwah against him for it - an edict to Muslims to kill him. The Japanese and Turkish translators of the book and the Norweigan publisher have been assassinated over it. Several others have died during protests. Salman has spent many years in hiding and police protection, but I’m not sure if he still was in recent years.
