Jihadist are doing what Muhammad commanded in the Quran. They can point to scriptures commanding them to do what they do.

The "crusades" that Muslims like to always point out cannot be backed by anything that Christ preached or anything that was taught in the New Testament.

Iran is the only state that recognized the fatwah. Their affiliates in Hezbollah also issued an edict for his death as did some Sunni hardliners in the Muslim Brotherhood and Wahhabi movements in Pakistan. Saudi Arabia/Egypt’s official stance was he should be brought to trial.
