Ryan Coogler was not the right director for Black Panther

And I thought they needed better action direction, the fight scenes weren't hitting for me
Somehow the poor fight at the end of the movie has made people forget all the good fights/action before it.

I'd put the Waterfall fights in the top tier for a comic book movie when you factor action, importance to the story, acting, music.

That one too, They were underwhelming as fukk I expected better after watching the winter soldier

It was good, but they did bust their load too early. Killmonger should've been a movie 2 or movie 3 villain. Killmonger outshined T'Challa and T'Challa getting his ass beat would've been more impactful if we got to see him flex on a couple of other villains.

shyt...a Killmonger spinoff would do crazy numbers - can you imagine that shyt or Black Panther 2 w/ Killmonger coming out next year after these protests? :wow:

:manny: they could always bring him back, its marvel

i personally would rather see t'challa develop where he adopts some of Killmonger's ideologies in more practical ways as Wakanda faces more external threats :manny: and T'challa and Shuri now have that dynamic instead

this would be dope to see in the MCU:

To the thread - Coogler had to minimize T'Challa a bit but the trade off was giving mainstream life and recognition to Wakanda itself, all the supporting characters, making Okoye iconic and an Avenger, Shuri, making Killmonger a tier 1 MCU villain strictly based off of his story/motivations, etc ... the fact that he involved Oakland in the 90s in the story, as well as paying tribute to various African cultures in their portrayal of Wakanda, addressing the disconnect in the diaspora between FBA and continental Africans ... all under a disney umbrella is hella impressive

Its precisely because T'challa was already highlighted in Civil War that he prolly made this choice, now that the world is established he can have center stage again in the sequels moving forward

The fight scenes where better in civilwar and the other russo brother movies. but other than that there was very little substance to Black Panther as a character in their movies. In the Coogler film; wayyyyy better characterization and world building, but the action was admittedly below average.
To me that means Ryan Coogler was the correct director. But whoever they had doing the fight choreography was wrong.
Apparently they used the same dude who did the fight choreography for Iron Fist. :beli:

Meanwhile The Russo's fight choreographer(winter soldier, civil war, infinity war) is doing the upcoming Black Widow movie so the action in that film should be piff.

There were only two issues I had with the Black Panther movie:
1. The shytty overly CGI final fight between Panther and Killmonger
2. T'Challa was softened a little bit too much especially compared to how in Civil War we were introduced to a T'Challa with some edge to him

Aside from that I felt Coogler did a great job.

Who would've been a better director?

Agreed but whoever did the fight scenes should be fired forever. His introduction in civil war was crazy and the fight scenes were so clean.

I enjoyed it, just like I enjoy most of his movies. My problem with him is, the plot of his movies are mostly basic. I want to see him tackle some more scripts with complex storylines.

Even this Mensah Musa movie he's planning, I appreciate it because me and dude share the same ethnic background but it says the plot is basically gonna be about his Hadj to Mecca. I mean, That's it?

That should not be your concern. Thats the same guy who did the Creed fight. The issue wasn't the fight choreography...its the guys who were the 2nd unit directors for action. The opening fight was great and very civil war like. Coogler actually seemed more hands on from the BTS footage. However, for the bigger set pieces you needed the guys who juggle that much action at a high level/in tandem with the CGI department. Those guys seemed to be on IW.

In a perfect world Infinity War comes out later that year and have those guys help out on Black Panther for certain scenes.

How do we know what T'Challa is/was? His father was killed in Civil War. Seeing him dealing with trauma/bloodlust because a parent is killed doesnt mean thats how they are all the time or most of the time. Also since Russos already covered/solved that at the end of the movie he really couldnt ride that wave. Especially since they took Klaue killing his father (when he was kid/Batman like trauma), and other mythos from him. This was a T'Challa in grief movie.

To piggy back on the earlier point....the opening fight scene in Black Panther was very Civil War esque.

If you break it down.

1. Black Panther fight in forest.
2. Black Panther fight/action scene on highway
3. Mini Black Panther scene of him jumping on the bomb and shot by Killmonger.
4. Black Panther scene at the end which we all know was bad.

The issue is there probably wasnt enough fighting in Black Panther....as Black Panther. Probably sacrificed some for story
I highkey think they should have let the movie be longer since it was covering so much, but it is what it is.

The major issue with the fight at the end was replacing Black Panther/Killmonger with full CGI models. That didnt appear to be the case at all in Civil War. For whatever reason when they gave him the new suit they decided to gof full CGI ending up being weightless and took you out of the fight.

However, in terms of actual moves....that wasnt the issue.

Somebody should have told them this area is too dark to work with full CGI models. Coogler should have moved it to the cliff, but really...they shouldnt have O'D on the CGI anyway.

I think that is the one area Coogler's gotta improve going forward as a director/writer. I think he did great with all his films, but (Fruitvale - True Story, Creed -Based off Rocky, Black Panther - Comic history/Hamlet)

He's going to have to expand his playbook so to speak.

Actually i did like that forest fight, although you really need a high quality tv to appreciate. in theaters it was just a jumble of shadows.

Taking the grief out of it, T'Challa was a more forceful character at every point in Civil War while in his own movie there was almost a "dad from a network sitcom" kinda vibe where he was surrounded by people who were being shown as smarter or more in control than him more than I was expecting.
Civil War T'Challa was more like the current comic book version of the character while BP T'Challa was less of that.

Yeah you're right. The movie had too much substance, black pride, emotion and overall great acting. Lupita was too fine. Michael B Jordan killed his roll too much. I don't think it's what people wanted to see, even though they went multiple times helping it earn over $700 million in the U.S.

His Hajj is where his legend gets legs.

He literally put Egypt in a state of hyperinflation and tanked the value of gold there for over a decade, just traveling through on vacation.
