Funny y'all bringing up Dusk Till Dawn, Coogler said himself he got the inspiration for Sinners from that movie.

But Sinners is waaay better than Dusk Till Dawn.
There is being inspired and straight up stealing. This was the latter.

And agree to disagree on your second point.

I loved this movie! It’s so different and it has layers. Really rich characters and relationships that tell their own story and help create a very authentic world. For me this is a masterpiece. I feel like a lot of horror has lost the art of making sure you know and care about the characters so when shyt goes down there are real stakes and you’re fully invested. No NPCs here, everyone matters. I also think it’s pretty impressive how funny and dramatic it is in equal measures. I laughed way more than I expected but it didn’t detract from any of the drama or horror. It was just a really cool movie. I hope Coogler keeps making horror. Also MBJ did really well with playing two characters. I’m usually not impressed by him but he did his thing here. But I really loved the women the most [Mosaku, Steinfield, & Li] and Delroy London stole every scene he was in. 10/10 IMO.

Loved it, 8.5/10

Can def see ppl's take that it falls short as a vampire flick, def see the nods to From Dusk Til Dawn

As someone w/family ties to Mississippi/Chicago/and the Entertainment biz the metaphors def resonated w/me

Like she said "They not haints they vampires ... they different" ... Like first you have the tale of Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil for his skills, then later on you have white artists like Elvis and Pat Boone straight up doing black style music ... But then the next wave u had artists like The Beatles and Rollimg Stones drawing from not only the blues but bringing old folk/gypsy style from Europe, alongside artists like Jimi Hendrix and Santana and that was packaged w/some free love/unity type of talk and then that spread into a whole culture

The movie wasn't in the big theatre at my Regal. Its old and they only got 2 big theatres, and it looked like they only use one side(half) of their theatres.

The Regal that was at the mall was where all the black people went was newer and had bigger screens.. They shut it down real quick during Covid:mjpls:

The villain's motive was also highlighted in post credit scene

Stack smelled death on Sammie and knew he was dying. He offered him a chance to be immortal. After he said no he asked could he play some real shyt for him. And in that moment those flashbacks were a way for Stack to see the sun and see his brother again one last time.

The movie was 100% made for black folk. The ‘isms, the jokes, the tone in delivery, all of it is relatable.

It’s really been a minute since we’ve had a mainstream film with black leads & a black film with “fukk you” at its core.

Also he presented an excellent concept with “the devil’s music”.

Ima keep it a stack tho, I think I like the idea of Coogler’s films more than his actual vision.

Coogler has big ideas but he’s not a good enough director or writer to execute them.

Sammy & the devil’s music being the key but his story not being fleshed out is probably the movie’s biggest flaw. It focuses heavily on MBJ and his backstory that no one really gave a fukk about when there needed to be more elements of how his music speaks the devil’s tongue or just captivates to people.

Instead we get MBJ and the ambiguous white girl, MBJ and his former flame, Sammy and the married wife, the white couple and the Indians on horses, Delray Lindo the drunk wonder and his war stories, it’s all over the place.

Sammy was used as a side character and playing music in the background for people with no suggestion that it’s doing anything to seduce people……but then we get a random quip from the lead vamp that he’s who they’ve been after all along. :dead:

It was very disjointed in themes & tones and the pacing was terrible lol. It took too long to get to the scenes that matter and a good portion of the scenes have expositions that could’ve been condensed.

Coogler either gotta figure out how to make his writing more nuanced or utilize more camera tricks when characters are speaking because dialogue is not his strong suit. The intro for example, where it cuts mysteriously with vampires while Sammy is walking in the church is probably the best usage of ambiguity and creativity in the movie.

The ending also was rushed, MBJ as red twin, blue twin didn’t work, the vampires were whatever, what the fukk was that musical scene with all the different eras, Delray Lindo was amazing.

For me this was a 6/10 but I can see why folks would give this a 10/10 or a 7. There’s good but it’s so hard to ignore the very mid aspects of it
