I don’t have too much to add to this thread but it seems most people here are thinking similar thoughts as me.

I don’t understand what Putin’s endgame here is. Maybe he just severely overestimated how easy Ukraine would fall.

Even though he’s a dirtbag authoritarian, he usually presents and conducts himself in a measured way. He jumped out the window and went straight old European genocidal tyrant in that speech, threatening nukes then the invasion.

Maybe he feels he has some kind of ace in the hole with China and India.

His end game is to retrieve all the former Soviet states. Finland and the rest of them better start teaming up, waiting and doing nothing only is inviting Putin to pick them off one by one. Is he ill? Yea he has Parkinson’s but seems hell bent on a last hurrah. His inner circle won’t do anything, I honestly believe they want this as well. If they pick off even more countries they actually makes them stronger in the long run

I see what you're saying but I disagree. I believe he's in this current position not because he's mentally unstable but because the US intelligence backed him into a corner and he literally has no way out.

Think about it. If the US doesn't expose his false flag operations, he still invades Ukraine but this time he has the support of his people. After all, "they killed a bunch of Russian soldiers. They struck first possibly at the behest of NATO."

He has the full throttle support of China, Kazakhstan and a lot of other nations because he's not the aggressor. He's responding to an attack on Russians. This means he's not isolated on the world stage. It means he's not isolated domestically.

If he made these same exact moves that he's made this week, but WITHOUT the US intelligence being released beforehand, he doesn't look mentally unstable. He looks like a completely rational leader that is simply defending his nation.

When he threatens nuclear action if any other nation gets involved, it seems like overkill but he has justification. They attacked Russia. He's only defending his nation.

The US intelligence being released in real time did more damage to Russia than we realize, and I believe that will be examined for decades to come.

That’s the only thing that makes sense. He must have had some kind of false flag in those eastern areas ready or thought he could drag Zelensky into overstepping early.

It looked so weird for him to continue that peacekeeper narrative going once the script got out.

He prepared 6 years for the sanctions.

But he wasn’t prepared for an intelligence breech.

Well said, all that “There should be WW3” type posts are being comfortably made thousands of miles away from any real consequence. I understand that this is an emotional topic but the absolute last thing anyone wants is to have this conflict escalate to the point of a global conflict.

But a Russia/NATO situation is gonna happen eventually. You're blind if you can't see that. It's only a matter of when.

Furthermore, read the tea leaves. Calls for NATO intervention are growing, not getting quieter.

Each day that passes, NATO is doing just a little bit more than the previous day.

Right now, sitting congressman are calling for a NATO imposed no fly zone over Ukraine.

If Zelensky continues to hold out, I believe it happens.

Of course, the flip side is he might get killed tomorrow and then the conversation ends.

But if he and the Ukrainian military are able to keep the fight up for some days longer, I believe that NATO at the least makes a move to put a no fly zone over Ukraine.

Where it goes from there is anybody's guess.

To be clear, I live in the Netherlands; we're in Poland because it's school holidays and we're visiting the fam. But thanks for the well wishing. The mood is insane. Poland has a shytty ass government but I'm actually quite proud of their response so far. I don't think any other country is going as far as Poland is, they're literally shipping out weapons and bragging about it.

Poland is only 30 years removed from Russian occupation, so the hate is deep. My wife (35) was born before the curtain fell, and my brother in law (40) and older fam vividly remember those times.

There's also quite some volunteers joining the fight, I'm not sure how this compares to other neighboring countries.

The people who are fighting are begging for NATO to get involved. They are pleading, begging, praying for help right now.

The Ukraine is putting up more of a fight than anyone had predicted, and the Russians are more divided than anyone had predicted. I just read verified reports that Kazachstan is refusing a call to help, and that some lawmakers in Russia are calling for an end to the invasion. Then there's the reaction within Russia by the civillians.

What I am saying is that posts like "the Ukraine should attack Poland" and "we should start WW3 now" are dangerous, and mean nothing if the people saying it aren't joining up to fight. Again, nothing is stopping anybody from joining right now.

If Russia had invaded Poland (through their puppet Belarus), the Ukraine would not join the war on day one either - unfortunately political relations are such that it's more complex, which is exactly what Putin is exploiting right now. A vast ugly gray area that Nato and the Ukraine occupy. He wants us to turn on each other.

1. Could this lead to WW3, yes.
2. SHOULD this lead to WW3.....shyt maybe.
3. Should we do everything possible to help Ukraine while avoiding WW3, abso-fukking-lutely a 1000% yes.

We should focus all of our efforts on answering .3 right now.

I welcome discussion on points 1 and 2, shyt unfortunately we should be discussing this. But I'm also pointing out posts like "Ukraine should attack Poland" as being waaaaaaaay out of line, and falling exactly for the trap Putin is trying to set.

Point number 3 is moot at this point (no pun intended). There's nothing more that we can do that will effectively help Ukraine other than give them air support at the least.

We can give them weapons but they are under siege RIGHT NOW.

Russia is going to ramp up their efforts to take Kyiv. Anything that is going to happen that is intended to seriously help in any way is going to have to happen soon.

Yes, it's crazy, we shouldn't even be here at this point... but this is where we are. If you have loved ones in Poland, this is going to be on their doorstep soon enough. If NATO does nothing, Poland will be dealing with this issue for many years to come.

Right now it's a matter of... do we deal with it now? Or leave it for us or worse, our sons and daughters to deal with down the road?

You're saying I don't have skin in the game cause I'm in America. The nukes that russia has are long range. I'm no safer than you are if a nuclear war happens.

I just don't believe it happens. I don't believe Russia truly wants that.

It's clear that russian troops don't want to be in Ukraine. Hell, I don't even think Putin wants to be there at this point. I believe he backs down if NATO threatens to seriously get involved.

That actually would give him a way out. I'm starting to think that he isn't quite as mad as we think he is. He's just a victim of his foolish gamble gone wrong.

But like I said, each day NATO grows closer and closer to getting involved. As you yourself said, Poland is sending weapons and bragging about it. So is the US.

NATO is already involved in this conflict, whether we like it or not.

Under no circumstances should the US or NATO directly intervene, it’ll spark WW3. That being said I agree Russia is likely not stopping with Ukraine. Especially since the US is pumping weapons through Poland into Ukraine. If Putin wants to attack a NATO nation (Poland) that will be the spark….so be it. But no rational person in the US wants to be the one to start WW3.

Russia’s poor military showing so far suggests to me they’d get rolled by NATO/US. But with Putin seemingly in a delusional state of mind, maybe he tries it anyway. If so we’re all fukked since nukes will fly.
