I think they'll see how 2018 plays out before considering it.

If they lose a lot of the house and the internal polling shows trump as the driver then there will be a reckoning. Right now the Republican Party believes that despite all the controversy, their constituents love trump. We have multiple stories where trump supporters are still happy with him at this point.

But until something tangibly tells the GOP the base is done with the dude for the most part, they will sell their souls to devil to maintain their job.

That is not a big secret. Presidential elections are always decided by a small handful of states (OH, IA, PA, FL, WI, MI, MO). And even within those states there is enough information that a campaign can focus on individual precincts/districts. Combine that with recent history (for instance how those districts voted in previous congressional elections) and you will have a good sense of where to concentrate your efforts.

There were other States that have come into play in recent elections due to demographic shifts. States like Virginia, North Carolina, Arizona have also come into play in recent times, while States like West Virginia have moved more to the right. Also within districts in States there are demographic shifts, specifically among African Americans and Hispanics in Northern States that only voting registration offices, precinct captain offices and Secretary of State offices would only likely know. All of that being the case even the Russian hackers would have needed help on the ground on where to focus their efforts and who to try to disenfranchise.
