So did Russ just start holding on to the ball too long? Improvisation is what made him what he was. Russ just looked altogether washed in Denver, and Hackett is an embarrassment. So Im not even considering anything from that season. I have no clue how good or bad that oline is,how horrible Russ might be. We will find out this season#ReturnOfTheNiceGuy
I mean it's not as simple as "hold on the ball too long = you suck" ...although generally holding onto the ball too long is a characteristic of most bad quarterbacks.
Pat Mahomes had one of the longer Time to Throws last season also. Part of that might be that teams are reluctant to blitz Mahomes.
Some other guys that hold onto the ball for a long time can make up for that by running the football (Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen).
The thing is, Russell Wilson isn't a scrambler like Jackson or Allen. Not anymore, anyway.
And I'm not sure if he has the ability to make those creative or magical plays like Mahomes.
At 35 years old, he's going to have to go a bit more into a game manager mode where it's 3 step drops, get the ball out. Or maybe they have him in a ton of shotgun. I suppose if anyone can build a system where he's successful, Sean Payton can do it. And with Denver's elite defense, it's not like they need Wilson to do a lot. You just wonder how much Wilson can adapt this late into his career.
I don't think Wilson will ever be a great QB again. But does he still have something left in the tank? Probably. I say that with optimism that Payton can help him. But I'll be honest, I thought Wilson was a horrible, horrible QB last season.
