I run a mile before work outs

This. Anybody saying otherwise on some bs. Either do them right after or do the cardio at a different time (i.e. Morning cardio, weights at night)

if you can do them in succession your probably not doing one of them 100%

In a nutshell, HIIT is a form of cardio that involves short bouts at high speed/intensity with periods of rest. I don't know much about Insanity to know if it incorporates HIIT into the workouts. HIIT, when done effectively, can burn a lot of body fat in a short period of time and will not make you lose the muscle you build from your workouts.
