The arsonist put out the fire they started. This is the market leader. Somehow a company trailing them found a way to reward their customers at no extra cost and make their current system backwards compatible with 3 generations of software at no extra charge.

Meanwhile the head of Sony's gaming division dismisses BC as something nobody really even wants then later decides to sell it as a service. If nobody wants it why is it being sole as a service now? I get that you probably can't play PS1 games in a PS5 because the disc drive doesn't read CDs. What's stopping them from enabling PS2 and PS3 games? If they're going to come out with a service that lets people play these games on a PS5 then the expectation should be if you already bought these games physical or digital then since the hardware can play them they should grant previous customers access.

It baffles me that people literally defend Sony on everything they do even if they have to bend themselves in a pretzel to match Sony's contradictions to their own previous statements:

Nobody wants to play old games : Let's sell access to old games as a service
We believe in generations now games only on new hardware : Let's bring our new titles to the old generation
PS5 requires an upgrade fee over PS4 games : Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't see Horizon Forbidden West.
No access to buy digital titles on PS3 and Vita : Keeps access because consumers demanded it

That last one is key. If Sony fans start standing up to this company they they'd act better but since so many fans just brainlessly follow them and parrot talking points Sony gets away with it.

I’ve argued these points with them for years. They don’t want to hear it. It blows my mind why they can’t be consistent. I have no problem saying PlayStation is my favorite console but I can’t stand some of Sonys business decisions. The Stans on this forum (on both sides) have this weird position that to be a fan of a console you have to defend every single aspect of that console and the decisions the company behind them makes. You have to absolutely love 100% of the console to be a true fan. You can’t have a single critique. You have to praise every single exclusive even if you don’t have the slightest intention of playing it and if you do, you don’t have to beat the game, you just have to defend it every chance you get. Say anything positive about another console and these grown men will shoot titangraphs at you in synchronized fashion about your “safe posting”. This is the way of the stan.

Again say what you will about Microsoft but when they try to pull bullshyt the fans call them out on it and policies get changed.
Microsoft "Kinect's the future" : Fans "No it ain't" Kinect gets dropped and it's now dead.
Microsoft "TV's the future" : Fans "No it ain't" the feature gets dropped and it's dead.
Microsoft "Your console needs to be always online" : Fans "We not having that" the feature gets dropped before release.
Microsoft "We doubling Xbox Live's price" : Fans "No you not" it doesn't happen.
Microsoft "No cross platform gaming" : Fans "make it happen" the feature happens to a fault.

When Sony pulls bullshyt the fans defend it. The only thing they really stood up to with them was shutting down the PS3 and Vita store and we see what happened there. If the fans started standing up to all these bunk policies they wouldn't happen or they'd get changed. Ultimately these companies do what they think they can get away with. That's why we don't have stuff like real backwards compatibility on PlayStation, why we don't have anything close to smart delivery having to pay more for a PS5 version on most games and maybe your save transfers, maybe it doesn't. Gamers complained about Horizon so they changed just that but nothing more.

Look at Halo Infinite. Fans formed like Voltron n shyt on the battle pass, shop, playlist selection. 343 felt the heat n now playlists been added, items that originally cost money in the shop were added to free battle pass events, items in bundles are now gonna be reduced n sold separately, etc.

not to mention Infinites gameplay, art style, enemies, story, etc is a soft reboot due to people absolutely raking the previous 343i games through the coals. We’d still be fightin prometheans in overly shiny hallways if nobody spoke up.

consumers got more power than they think, the key is to reach a critical mass of people demanding change to get corporations to bend the knee.

Battlefront 2 is another example. That EA spokespersons post defending it is still to this day the most downvoted reddit post of all time
Now Battlefront 2 looks like a completely different game(in a good way) after the negative reaction by gamers.
