Crazy how Roger taught Quik how to use the talk box and the legacy continues. I’d love to learn someday, but truth be told I’m not sure that Roger/Zapp is underrated but rather that they get lost in the shuffle because there were other legendary acts in Funk. They along with Parliament/Funkadelic were definitely the most unique of the bunch.

Yea that pcp and coke fukked sly up :francis:

George too...as well as other shyt :mjlit:

Yeah, PCP and coke took over Sly's world. :mjcry:

After dropping the last Sly and the Family Stone album in 82', he made occasional appearances throughout the 80's

A few other joints from the 80's too

This one is from 1990, a joint he did with Earth wind and Fire

I think so, bruh
The more I go back and listen to his music, Roger really picked up the baton for Funk in the 80's man
Sly had stopped putting out new music after the early 80's, George had cooled after the early 80 as well and Curtis' 80's work was no where near his 70's input

This made way for Roger and he kept that shyt funky to the utmost.

Prince was keeping it funky too, but while Prince experimented and gave us a variety of sounds, Roger kept that shyt funky 100%.

Roger could write, produce, arrange and all that shyt. He was just as much of a genius as is Sly, Curtis and Prince IMO

Man, if Sly would've linked up with Roger in like 88' for an album, that shyt would been nice

Even tho Sly was sitting on the sidelines for most of the 80's, Sly had embraced the 80's sound. Imagine if Sly would've worked with Roger on an album

No mention of Rick James:ufdup:

Met him when I was yougin in line at McDonald's in Dayton,OH on a family trip the weekend he died. My dad let him use his cell phone which had me :dwillhuh: at the time cause he never let anyone thouch his phone back then. It's crazy that they announced his passing that Sunday (IIRC) and played his music on the radio that whole day.

Stevie Wonder was the one that was using that technology first, from what I know. Roger/Zapp and Frampton popularized that effect.......so I will concede that Roger's influence is there.

Facts in regards to how it is perceived today vocally, but there were a few cats that used early variations of it playing their axe/guitar through one, Sly and Shuggie had him beat by a couple.

This is still the dopest use of it I've seen/heard tho Roger was a beast with it too, but damn:wow:

thanks for the info and correction.
that was a great era for music. lines drawn between genres of music were being crossed and ignored.....and it didn't dilute the music, it made it better

Interesting that it was Sly and SO that were using it ahead of Stevie. When you corrected me, I thought you were going to say Herbie Hancock. The stuff he was doing in that era was crazy.
