Its was ahead of its time back then but there so much IP out there with robots way more advanced than 80s futuristic Robocop that they have to contend with (i.e. Iron Man armors)
In terms of the the actual robot parts/armor, I thought the reboot did a good job with the upgrades

He only moved stiff out of necessity, not an actual design. That's where the tech was at the time from a special effects standpoint so they had to make do.
