TFA was fukking trash and a straight up copy of ANH. Not only the plot was the same, the setup for next movie was the same as ANH. Deathstar destroyed, Rey/Luke goes to trained with Jedi master.

The criticism that TFA inspired Rian Johnson to subvert expectations with the sequel.

TFA does not get the blame for what it ultimately cause. If Rian Johnson didn't subvert, we would probably got The Empire Strikes Back remake
TFA did back Rian into a corner, but it shouldn’t have if Disney planned the entire story arc out ahead of time. Yes it was highly analogous to ANH, but it also introduced many promising characters and places the story could go and brought back the Star Wars feeling for me with a great John Williams score. I think people underestimate the difficulty of creating new characters and launching a new franchise on the level that Star Wars is, and I think JJ accomplished that easily. It is objectively not a bad movie at all, you might not like it because it’s too similar to a new hope, but that is precisely the reason I liked it. Then, because Disney didn’t plan out the story or the characters arcs it devolved into trash. I wasn’t the one complaining about how they handled Luke because Rian had to explain why Luke would disappear for so long thanks to TFA, and it mirrored Obi-wan on tatooine, and him sacrificing himself etc. As a stand-alone film TFA is fun and entertaining and I highly enjoyed it. And when it dropped everyone enjoyed it, now after the sequels were released everyone shyts on it but i don’t remember anyone saying they “hated” it

TFA didn't force TLJ to:
- Destroy Luke's character
- Turn Finn into a fool and push him into an embarrassingly bad side quest
- Completely ignore the Knights of Ren
- Kill the main villain without any characterization and fail to setup a main villain or momentum for the third film

People complain about JJ's "mystery box" stories, but when you're the second movie in a trilogy I see that as setup - as a gift. Remember all the hype and speculation after TFA? I don't think there was half as much after TLJ. Rian could've literally taken the story anywhere but he took the absolute worst option: completely ignore everything. JJ held off from using one of the most popular characters in the history of film until the last minute of his movie, giving Rian an excellent alley-oop for his movie. What did Rian do? Toss that light sabre over his shoulder like it was funny.

No matter what you think of TFA or TLJ as individual films, it's crazy to think TLJ did anything to help the overall trilogy.

Not really a gift.. i mean there were some interesting things that JJ setup but overall it was a lot of rehash and i just don't feel like the trilogy ever had a shot.

And JJ had a chance to correct it and he didn't.. Rise of Skywalker is the worst big budget franchise sequel i've ever seen.
