He pretty much ruined The Alien franchise, so I guess he's right.

In all actuality, he kinda saved what was left of the alien franchise and gave it context as far as its origin and the clear villain as well.
At this point, he at least re-righted where aliens was. when the dark horse comic took over Contintuity of the franchise and put it in its best place after the original og movies alien and aliens. Now granted the franchise was moved into the wrong realm in aliens three where newt was killed. Which imo, hurt the entire franchise and took the story away from the sweet spot of story telling post aliens. Plus removed the evolution of the heroine in the series.
from newt aNd ripley and someone with passion in the continuity.
to eliminate the xenomorphs in the mythos the audience was familiar with.
Granted what he wanted to do and how it ended up was a condensed compromise in two direction changing dynamic based movies. One from a overthought perspective in Prometheus.
to a more condensed salvaged perspective of that overthought plane in alien covenant.
Imo, I think he did a good job. Imo, the critics in the national scene who make up the critical acclaim who are all paid for. As we can easily see from star wars. I feel they hijacked the rating for his movies, Prometheus and alien via payola.
As both are very good alien movies if judged against the movies in the genre and the franchise. Which at this point is all you can do with aliens at this point. As it is not some Oscar worthy movie. It is a creature feature and if judged by that and against itself in the franchise and genre. I don't know how or why past payola the movie is given bad reviews. As a creature feature and in its own franchise and genre. Prometheus and covenant are as good of movies in the genre as you can find. Plus as great a compromise as you are gonna get to salvage the series and drive it into a realm that makes sense. After aliens three and everything after it.
