Performances are often based on directors. They tell the actor what range to play based on the movie around them. Sometimes the director sees something everyone else’s doesn’t (like depp in Pirates 1) other times they modulate them and tell them how to play it.
Sam said so many times he doesn’t understand venom or that characters appeal. And that’s a goofy movie. Topher played eddie and venom based on the movie.
Plus, not for nothing, venom isn’t evil lol. He’s a fukking goofball who sings show tunes and wants to eat brains.

It's really not that pivotal in the grand scheme of Spidey.
By the time Venom came around, Sam was out of comics. He was more into cats like goblin, vulture, sandman, Oct, etc. Venom wasn't his generation and, I agree with sam that he was written pretty shallowly and was an awful character in the 80s and 90s. He said he didn't understand the character and didn't get it. I'm sure that would be the same if you asked someone from the 90s who stopped reading comics about Morlun

I mean that whole symbiote arc, which then culminated with eddie stalking spiderman and damn near killing him was dope. I never read the comics to be frank I just remember the animated series in the 90s.
that's not in the comics. that's what im saying.
in the comics, it was just a suit that would take over Peter at night and fight crime and he'd wake up the next day and not remember shyt. then he found out it was alive and trying to take him over but it never brought out his bad side. that was strictly for the animated series and subsequent tellings of the story because it's a great idea and one better than they did in the 80s.
But even then Venom wasn't written evil in that cartoon
he was a giant goofball who drove a big rig. and in the larger scope of Spidey, the story isn't that big of a deal because right after that in the comics, the goblin resurfaced and became a much larger issue for him. Green Goblin and Ock will always be a bigger threat to Peter. shyt, maybe even Kraven based on Kraven's last hunt.
