This thread is now 23 pages long and half of the discussion has centered on Democrats vs Republicans. In 2022 it's easy to discern which side is liberal and which side is conservative due to how diametrically opposed each side is to the other.

Which brings me back to my point that the political landscape was different back then at least for the simple fact that the democratic party still had conservative members actually serving in the Senate.
