It was tough going for DeVonta Smith and the Philadelphia Eagles after the rookie wide receiver went out of training camp with an MCL injury. However, that did not change his standing among the other pass catchers in the receiver room.

Smith was the No. 10 overall pick and expected to immediately fill the No. 1 wide receiver role for the Eagles. It also helped having former Alabama teammate Jalen Hurts throwing him the football.

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Adam Hermann broke down the wide receiver performances through nearly two weeks of training camp and listed Smith still clearly the best receiver on the team.
“Before he got hurt a week ago Saturday, Smith was clearly the best wide receiver in camp, which you would expect considering his credentials,” Hermann wrote. “This is important time he’s missing and all the film study and work on the JUGS machine doesn’t replace reps. Smith looks like he’s close to returning, and if he’s back soon – maybe the first practice after the Steelers game? – that would really help both him and Jalen Hurts, whose play has been uneven since losing his favorite receiver.”

Smith’s diagnosis revealed the injury to be minor and the Eagles said they would hold out Smith for approximately two to three weeks last week.
In the meantime, the Eagles expect last year’s first round pick Jalen Reagor to step up in his absence, particularly if Smith actually misses multiple games or the entire preseason prior to the opener.

In his college career, Smith finished with 235 catches, 3,965 yards, 46 touchdowns and 16.9 yards per catch. Last year, during his Heisman campaign, Smith finished with 117 catches, 1,856 yards, 23 touchdowns and 15.9 yards per catch.
In the national championship, Smith played just one half before a hand injury but was dominant against Ohio State. He finished the first half with 12 catches, 215 yards, three touchdowns and 17.9 yards per catch.

NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro sees Smith breaking the Eagles rookie receiving record for yards. In fact, Zangaro would be shocked if Smith doesn’t lead the Eagles in receiving as a rookie in general.

When answering his mailbag, Zangaro pointed out recent success for rookie wide receivers as reason to believe Smith will have just as much in 2021.

“Smith’s over/under total for yards is 750.5, according to PointsBet,” Zangaro wrote. “If he can top that, it gives him a legitimate shot to break the Eagles’ rookie record of 912 set by DeSean Jackson in 2008. In the last two years, there have been nine rookie receivers to top 750 yards and seven of them led their team’s receivers in receiving yards. The only two who didn’t were Chase Claypool and CeeDee Lamb last season. But Tee Higgins, Justin Jefferson, Jerry Jeudy, A.J. Brown, Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel all led their teams in receiving as rookies.

“….Smith is good enough to shine even if he’s not the top dog. But in Smith’s real-life scenario, I’d be shocked if he didn’t lead the Eagles in receiving yards as a rookie. It’s a combination of his skill level and the lack of another bonafide playmaker in the Eagles’ receiver room.”
