austin in 98 early 99 is arguably the.most.popular wrestler of all time lol
his mr.mahon angle brought a dying franchise back to life lol
your nuts lol

was he even the most popular wrestler that year, let alone all-time??

bill goldberg was just as big or bigger than austin in '98.

Nothing racist about that

Hogan was a bigger legend in the wrestling business at that point

Same with Austin and Rock

The way I see it Austin and Hogan are A1 and A2 on the all time list

Rock and Cena are more like B1 and B2
Hogan is A1 and Rock/Austin are B1/B2

Cena isn't in this conversation and he still has to beat out Flair for the top 4

Rock was one of the most giving superstars in wrestling history. He rolled with the crowd turning on him better than anyone could have. He called an audible and started working heel mid match. Austin probably would've stormed out on the spot and thrown a fit backstage. Dude was a typical insecure wrestling star always paranoid about his "spot". Dude quit the company when he was asked to put over Brock lol.

lol
jim ross said it out of his mouth that was the plan lol
austin adressed it as well
just admit you werent watchin back then
Wasn't the reason Austin turned it down was that he didn't think he could live up to expectations as their styles just don't mesh well and his resume didn't need the match. So, he pushed for Rock vs. Hogan which was an iconic match for the Rock and his 1st real win at Mania as the Rock.

LOL WHAT!? Austin was always about doing business the right way. He was 100% willing to put over Brock on a PPV not on Raw. Which was always the right move. They wasted Brock vs. Hogan on Smackdown and no one remembers that.

He didn't want to lose to Hogan, he didn't want to lose to Brock, he refused to work with Mero, etc. He was 100% a backstage politician. Like most big wrestling stars. I'm not even really blaming him, but he absolutely was not selfless like The Rock.

It was a wrap for nWo after he refused to lose to Scott Hall at WMX8

austin was more popular
wcw was already winning, he just added to it.
austin saved an entire company

it wasnt just austin.

- mike tyson gave them a huge boost
- the WWF jumped into the shock-TV realm head-first.
- the rise of the rock, the mcmahon heel turn, the more popular version of DX, mick foley, kane, nation of domination, taker.

i never cared for austin and i definitely was tuned into the WWF way more in '98 than '97.

Ehhhhh, I remember that solely cause I had never seen Hogan absolutely get bludgeoned like that. Brock wiped him out with a chair, beat him senseless, spit on him, then wiped Hogan’s blood on his body :laff::laff:but Austin not wanting to face Brock wasn’t a politic thing, he wanted an actual build while the WWE just wanted Brock to smoke him on a random Raw or SD, damn near a squash.

One thing I'll say on Austin/Rock/Hogan.....Austin is the only one who never got the "we're sick of you" heat.

so austin was too good to put brock over on a weekly show, but hogan had no problem doing it??

and yes indeed, people remember brock destroying hogan on smackdown.

thats because his run was also the shortest.

WWE also didnt waste time turning him heel/face whenever he got the least bit stale.
