Alicia was never a great technical singer. Most people aren't versed enough to know this. That wasn't her pull was or what it seemed she was aiming to be. Alicia was a musician and a songwriter who could sing. And more importantly, she had a voice that was pleasant. You can be a great singer and not having a pleasing voice. Alicia had a unique sound. That's why she was on.

I understand where you coming from, but its like you said everybody didn't come up like Rick so others aren't going to be receptive to people who come off like azzholes. This is a different era.
It's just like in coaching you can chastise some guys and use an elevated tone of voice, but other guys dont respond to that.

He's right. Anybody that knows a little something about music or has a good ear knows that alicia keys isnt the musical prodigy as they tried to market her to be when she came out. I been saying this shyt from the jump back in 2001. It's all just marketing, manipulation and just the hype machine tricking the masses that cant think for themselves, not questioning shyt. Rick james knows his shyt because hes a real musician. He wrote his shyt. He composed his own music. He produced his shyt and other peoples music. Alicia keys dont even do that. Yall never heard of alicia keys producing or writing other peoples records because she cant.
What turned me off about her was basically that falling in love record she did. The piano on it is basically someone elses work, a sample and looped. I know I heard that shyt somewhere else before I even heard her record. Then added a beat machine to that shyt and there it is. Its manufactured bullshyt that was being pushed like it was Motown or Stevie wonder. She did not compose her shyt and even worse, she CANNOT sing. She is literally straining her voice. Literally. You can hear it. I knew from the jump that she was a gimmick ass fraud and never fukked with her music ever. I wont even get into her performances. I remember seeing her on video music box when her performance was so bad that she had to resort to playing marj j's real love to keep the crowd alive.
Prince said the same shyt about beyonce too because she is basically the same shyt. He was working with her and she didnt even know what an octave was. See Prince, Rick James, Stevie and the legends know their shyt as its shown in the music so if you put them next to an alicia keys and a beyonce. Its an insult to them. They know these folks aren't musicians. They are just put their industry to make money because thats what the music business has became. Convincing people that someone has musical talent instead of actual merits.
I think @NYC Rebel is the only person i know that basically broke that shyt down perfectly. He did it way back on hamster.

This is a bad take. Sounds like you're insinuating Alicia ushered in an era of cac RnB when she was the least pop and most soulful (other than Mary) of all the commercially successful RnB acts. You would have to look at Soul artists to get more of what Alicia brought to the table. She was literally the antithesis of pop RnB when RnB was becoming Tweet, Destiny's Child, Blu Cantrell and Aaliyah's More Than A Woman etc. All music some cac girl could sing and we wouldn't bat an eye. Meanwhile, Alicia was writing songs like A Woman's Worth. Authentic and soulful.
If we gonna keep it funky, Timbalands production is what made it possible for cacs to get into R&B. Not Alicia Keys.

I said her music was more soulful than the shyt I mentioned and what I mentioned were the top R&B songs when she dropped. That's the point.
A New York chick shooting a video in New York, at a bodega, in a diner crooning about how a man should treat a sista is undoubtedly more soulful than 3 bytches flailing about on a green screen talking about "pay my bills" or Mariah at a race track or a carnival talking some dumb shyt. All she has to do to be more soulful than them is write her own music. She was doing that and then some.

She or Alicia cant stand next to Prince and Stevie's musicality but neither could/can 90% of the industry past and present (Prince could play 20 plus instruments) ... doesnt mean they arent talented or that they dont make great music
Alicia is a proficient piano player. Writes the majority of her music. Helps produce...Beys vocal technique if know music is A1. You can tell now shes had classical training ....she helps write and produce her music...shes an A1 performer....

What exactly is the difference aside from the way it's being packaged. They basically packaged her as this neo soul artist from the inner city for people who weren't into the blatant pop brand of r&b. They took different peoples styles in the neo soul, r&b and rap lane and there you have alicia keys. It's as inauthentic as it gets
The worst thing that happened to alicia keys is her getting creative control of her shyt.
as I said, if she was so great as they made her out to be, why hasn't she wrote or made music for other artists.
