that "special edition" & "collectors edition" stuff was the ULTIMATE hustle. :mjlol: Might be one of the best marketing scams of all-time. People were like, "it says special edition, I gotta get it!"

Every DVD that came out was automatically a "special edition", even though there was never a 'regular' or bare-bones edition that came out before it. Then they'd come out w/ a collectors edition w/ more "extras" that you're never going to watch.

They'll likely never see that boom again b/c I think ppl caught on to the game after awhile.

lol, we didn't have a DVD player for the longest, then i got a laptop and used that to watch DVD's, this first DVD player we got was when they finally started making those $30-40 joints...had it all through college and 3-4 years after

i'm not into movies like that, i either just do comcast ondemand or stream online...so i can live without one

Then in 2000 the first DVD I rented was Heavy Metal 2000 :russ:

Full screen DVD's :beli:

Non-anamorphic DVD's :beli:

I'll say this much though, DVD cases look classier than Blu Ray cases :manny:. Not much of a collector (I don't care to own a collection really) but Blu Ray's look like they belong in a nursery.

You younger guys may not recall it as much, but the jump from VHS to DVD was a big deal.

I remember paying like $30 to get 'Saving Private Ryan' on DVD b/c it was supposed to be the pinnacle of picture quality at the time...I didnt even care for the movie that much. People would pause certain parts of movies just to admire the picture quality. :wow:

Seeing little details or colors than you couldn't notice on a VHS. Or renting a VHS movie that had been rented tons of times before so picture quality had faded, now was no longer an issue.

And the sound quality. Before you could only get Dolby Pro Logic sound, but now w/ DVD you had the exact same sound potential as the theater(if you had the surround system). Hearing those bullets ricochet around in your rear speakers in the comfort of ur own room was :gladbron:

The other early-on"must have" showoff DVD release was "Gladiator"

buying all the movies you had on VHS on DVD. :wow:

I am glad when we made the jump to Blu-ray I did not have to buy movies all over again.
