Theres a good documentary about it on netflix Ill see if ic an find it , but basically the money the island owed was not because of Haitians but because of the french , since it was a french controlled colony. The second wave of money came because haitians leaders for whatever reason thought it was be a good idea to borrow money from france to reconstruct the island, and lastly IMF loans ( a grand majority of which were forgiven after the earthquake) were borrowed for impossible amounts.

That and the fact that the island has never really gotten a steady trade/economy going , and the fact that it has negative stigma attached to it , I'm old enough to remember in the early 90s when AIDS was spreading that for a long time it was the belief of many people that AIDS originated in haiti smh, its a shame too because it could be a huge tourist destination there are some beautiful beaches/jungles over there

Thats not true, I think a Polish population remained in Haiti plus many of the elite descended from a white grandfather this is why there is 3-5% mulatto population in Haiti.


Haiti did however kill off much of the French and Spanish population though.

Haiti suffered punitive measures against it's economy. Haitians had to reimburse France for millions. b*stards. Haiti should have had a stronger farmer class prepared to take over after the revolution, because we were still producing loads of sugar.
