I used to watch Political Incorrect every night when I was kid. I credit Maher for sparking my personal interest in politics. But he was never a far left liberal, & neither am I. I remember back then when he'd have Chuck D or KRS on he'd go on rants about hip hop culture. I vividly remember when he had an all rap panel with Nelly, Eve, & Sisqo because he couldn't wrap his head around how the music was so misogynistic. As liberal as he was he wasn't a fan of the culture. I didn't agree with everything he said even back then.
Truth be told, I don't think he's terrible. He's the same way now as he was 15/20 years ago. Times have changed, & he's not in tune with the left anymore. I know plenty of conservatives who hate his guts too.
But I also think the Daily Show isn't as good, & if it weren't for Trevor Noah, I wouldn't bother watching it.
