I can see this point, but then I kind of don't see this point
:patrice:

Mainly because when you say "keep it going" I think you're saying continue to pay the streamers bills for them. They aren't using their own streaming site, so regardless of them getting donations, twitch will work for whoever wants to go there and watch footage.
by "keep it going" I mean that particular channel. they like that particular streamer, and/or the chat

these streamers do spend time and money to stream. I'm sure most started out just doing it for fun. but when people start expecting you to do it consistently, at some point it does become like a job

whats different ?
I can only speak for myself, but the only reason I donated here (10 bucks) was for them to upgrade their servers so they wouldn't be :sohh: status.

One time donation, I don't plan on donating again. I'm assuming most people on here donated because of that.

The "community" comparison makes some sense but it's not the same thing because, there isn't any reoccurring subscription fee here. I don't think any coli posters are donating on a monthly basis like a lot of these followers are for streamers. I could be wrong, but I doubt it

lot of people donate to streamers for the exact reason. a new game comes out, dedicated watchers donate so they can buy items, etc.. (cases in counter strike, cards in hearthstone, etc.. )

or so they can get new hardware to stream better.

its 100% the same exact thing.

I know that it's not easy to sustain a consistent following. But once they are established... and I assume they have a decent setup before they dive into the streaming scene, how much money do they need for streaming content? They don't need to buy new equipment every month to maintain their stream. That's why I said, "keep it going" means pay their bills so they can keep playing as much as they do so that it can become a job for them.

And games come out every week/month... last time the admins put up anything about donating for upgrading the servers was 2 years ago, and it'll probably be the last time as well

You'll pay to see athletes just play a game though
Some of these streamers with huge followings aren't any better at some of the games that they stream than some of the coli brehs.

Forking out bread to go to a pro sports event is not comparable at all, c'mon now

Some of em are some of the best at the games they play

Just playin devils advocate, notice the tournament channels are the highest subscription price.

The highest viewed streams are competitive LOL players or CS players or rogue like players.

At the end of the day it's just entertainment, the rest of it comes down to introverts searching for a sense of comradery through like interests online. Twitch is a way for geeks to meet up hang out and share with each other without the anxiety of meeting people in person

Like I said I've never donated or subscribed to any one these people, but I do watch the better players on games I enjoy for either pointers or just to check the game out. (Ill watch Madden MUT streams or Binding of Isaaac, or maybe a newly released game to get some genuine gameplay impressions)

I do the same with Let's Plays on youtube sometimes.

ok but a lot of people look at them as radio personalities more so than the sports comparison. (entertainment).

Radio hosts out here getting $100 million contracts to just talk :usure:

I can see that comparison. I was not going for the pro sports angle at all

to be fair, in most competitive games, the top streamers are usually the top players in the respective game.

This is so silly. How in Gods name can you compare a video game streamer to a world class athlete? None of us have a prayer of being Steph Curry or play in the NBA/NFL/ETC. There is a good likely hood that you can be a competitive player with enough time and effort. Skills to be a gamer and to be an athlete are not in the same realm. And as far as donations being equivalent to donations on here, like Golden said most of us donated 5 or ten here was because we wanted the servers upgraded and stable(BK and Brook didn't have some media conglomerate backing them like SOHH) It was for our benefit because we want a cool posting experience. What benefit does one get donating hundreds of dollars so someone can purchase items in a MOBA or CS? Not the same thing at all
