This is highway robbery to the nth degree brehs. The World Cup cost what, 11 billy? Lets say all in all the businesses combined made 500 milly (and that's being RIDICULOUSLY generous) of which Brazil taxes what, 34%? so let's assume they net 150 milly more or less. They roughly invested 10x the income generated, of which all that money is to be paid by the Brazilian taxpayer, while all these businesses hit a lick. This is some Guy Fawkes revolutionary fodder type material. I can't believe the Brazilians ain't do like the French with this bullsh*t.

where are you getting these figures?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_FIFA_World_Cup_preparations

The costs of the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament in Brazil are estimated to be the highest in the history of the FIFA World Cup.[1]

Forecasts on the eve of the tournament place the cost to the Brazilian government at $14 billion.[2] This expenditure has largely been on stadium works and infrastructure projects. Football's governing body, FIFA, will also spend an estimated $4 billion on staging the final tournament

http://www.americasquarterly.org/zimbalist

Brazil’s projected budget for hosting the World Cup is $13.3 billion and $18 billion for the Olympics (not counting the projected amount of public and private investment that will be needed before). The problem is that based on recent games, the World Cup generates approximately $3.5 billion in revenue (with most going to FIFA) and the Summer Olympics generate around $5 billion (with most going to the IOC).1 Simple arithmetic says that the games will be net losers for the host country unless the host makes up the difference with increased income from tourism and investment during the games or—as a result of the games—in the future.

:heh: dude said they would be lucky to generate half a billy. And he was serious too.
I haven't read any articles about Brazil's expenses on getting infrastructure up-to-date for the world cup. I do know it's up there, because it's a huge sporting event. There is poverty and World Cup is a huge expense. I don't disagree with that.
I really don't follow soccer so as soon as its over, it's back to NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB. :manny:

World Cup Brazil will generate $4 billion in total revenue for FIFA, or 66% more than the previous tournament in South Africa in 2010. The vast majority of the money will come from the sale of television and marketing rights. The World Cup generates more revenue for its association than any other sports tournament, save the Olympics (based on revenue per-event-day, the NFL’s Super Bowl reigns supreme). FIFA’s profit for the Brazil World Cup: $2 billion.

Brazilian Minister of Sports Aldo Rebelo said the tournament could pump $90 billion into the economy over the next 10 years.

FIFA has suggested that the 12 new or refurbished stadiums across the country being used for the Cup will be big draws for the local club teams that wind up using them.

Analysts claim that Rebelo's figure is a bit far-fetched, especially given that the estimate for the 15-year economic impact of the 2006 World Cup, held in Germany, is under $5 billion and that the actual revenues for the 2010 Cup in South Africa have been closer to $500 million than to the $900 million initially reported. :lupe:

Brazil lost in so many breh, it's funny because it's sadly true :wow:

where does it say that they'd be lucky to bring in $500MM? South Africa's WC generated more than that and Brazil has had far more people attending this one. I'm not making a case that it was a profitable venture, just that your figures are rather skewed.

Let's say they're skewed by 100%, let's say Brazil made 1 billy, which they didn't, that's still only $340M, compared to the estimated 11-14 billion in expenses. BRAZIL IS NOT A COUNTRY THAT CAN AFFORD TO THROW AWAY $10.5B breh.

Worst sports loss of all time? Probably.

Nation devastated? Probably not. It's just sports.

Go on reddit and there are plenty of Brazilians describing their nation as "over it" or having other concerns like any other day.
