The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is proud to welcome the 2023 Astronaut Scholar Class. This year ASF has awarded 68 scholarships to students from 46 different universities across the nation. Astronaut Scholarships are awarded to students in their junior and senior year of college studying science, technology, engineering, or mathematics with the intent to pursue research or advance their field upon completion of their final degree. Suzanne Walsh, president of Greensboro’s Bennett College , Chancellor Harold Martin of N.C. A&T State University and Interim Chancellor Anthony Graham of Winston-Salem State University, gathered for a private roundtable discussion, organized by Triad Business Journal on Jan. 11. Several alumni from the universities also joined in the conversation. TBJ organized the gathering to discuss the roles the institutions play in the region in terms of workforce readiness, economic development and diversity of talent, but also the opportunities and challenges each institution faces.

ASCEND Initiative​

On March 5, 2024, Provost Scott Strobel announced the Alliance for Scholarship, Collaboration, Engagement, Networking and Development (ASCEND) to strengthen Yale’s partnership with HBCUs, whose missions center on the education of Black Americans. Over the next five years, Yale will commit $2 million annually, for a total of $10 million, to this initiative. ASCEND will support research collaborations between HBCU and Yale faculty, provide resources for HBCU faculty research projects, and expand pathway programs for HBCU students. These programs, planned in collaboration with HBCU partner institutions, commit to increasing representation and amplifying the significant contributions of HBCUs in shaping the academic landscape.

The collaboration with NC A&T will center on Quantum and Nanoscience Technology and Health Equity

New chancellor announced for NC A&T. Here’s who will lead the country’s largest HBCU.​

James Martin II will be the 13th chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University.

James Martin, an engineer with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, will be the 13th chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University — a job in which he will lead the country’s largest historically Black university.

Martin will join A&T from his current role as vice chancellor for STEM research and innovation at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was previously dean of the university’s engineering school. With a research background in risk engineering and earthquake science, he began his career as a professor at Virginia Tech before becoming an engineering department chair at Clemson University.

He will begin his new role Aug. 15. The UNC System Board of Governors named Martin for the role in a special meeting Friday, approving system President Peter Hans’ nomination. The search process to find the university’s next leader began last fall, after Chancellor Harold Martin — the longest-serving current chancellor in the 17-campus UNC System — announced he would retire at the end of the academic year.

James Martin will take the helm from Harold Martin — no relation — at a time of consistent, record growth for A&T. The Greensboro university is one of the fastest-growing in the country, and for 10 consecutive years has been the nation’s largest HBCU by enrollment. Its enrollment in each of the past three academic years, including a total enrollment last fall of more than 13,800 students, has made it the largest-ever HBCU
