OP I get what you mean and your reasoning makes sense..

that being said, I think the score by the fugees or all eyez on me by Tupac fit what you’re describing better.. two commercially and culturally impactful records that also stayed true to hip-hops roots in the streets and still get respect not only in the streets, but also with hip-hop heads, and commercially to this day.. two albums that have universally and eternally transcendent records in ready or not and California love..

I thought this album was so fukkin bad. I will never understand people's amazement with it.
It wasn’t soooo bad, just overproduced and soooo overrated.

I never got the fascination with bc Kanye as a rapper though, Jay-Z should’ve got on his CL Smooth shyt and just told him “Make my beats fakkit”.

@Ohene

I agree, but only from my perspective. What I want out of hip hop, I'm no longer getting. And that's cool. I've changed, hip hop has changed, and the artists I grew up with - either they stay the same, and I'm not interested, or they change...into something I don't want to hear.

As far as MBDTF, that's one of the last records in the last 20 years I heard that just blew me away.

Looking through what Google said dropped since......, picking out other possible peaks
  • 2011 - Watch the Throne
  • 2012 - Good Kid, m.A.A.d City
  • 2013 - Meh- Yeezus and Magna Carta - major steps down, Maybe Nothing was the Same... But by then hip hop had seriously changed.
  • 2014 - Meh
  • 2015 - To Pimp a Butterfly
  • 2016- Meh
  • 2017 - Damn & More Life
  • 2018 to Now - Meh...

Lotta names I recognize, but at no point have I been hype about Tyler or Earl Sweatshirt or ASAP Rockie. They're speaking to young cats. Same with Future, Migos, Young Thug, etc....

Hip Hop keeps splitting.
  • NWA made everyone gangstas
  • The Chronic said good bye to Digging in the Crates
  • The Love Below said it was okay to sing
And for the most part things have been differentiating ever since.

Honestly cats like Nas, Jay, Yeezy, Drake, Kendrick - they're not really what the culture is about these days. And they haven't been for a while. They are still capable of putting out hits of course, but the game has really changed.

On an 'artistry meets sonically' level? I'll allow the argument...
