Ehh I get it but I still believe getting your team in possession to make baskets >>>taking the 3 just because . Specifically for the bolded
I don't think you just take any shot just because, but you should definitely prioritize the most efficient shots.

Not only is the midrange the least efficient shot, but it also shrinks the space. If the Clippers are prioritizing the midrange, it means it'll lead to fewer easy scoring opportunities. Folks keep talking about it's easy to score in the paint in today's league, and that's because there are fewer defenders in and around the paint, as they're out on the perimeter and/or covering more ground to account for 3-pt shooting. What do you think happens when defenses don't have to account for that same degree of 3-pt shooting? They're going to be closer to the paint and closer to providing help defense.

The further you stretch a defense, the easier it is to score; the less you stretch a defense, the harder it is to score.

P.J. Tucker spoke about this a couple of years ago. He said it was a whole lot easier for him to provide help defense when the midrange was in vogue, as he'd only need to take a couple of strides and he'd be at the next man, but defending the 3-pt shot is an entirely different beast, it means he has to cover twice the amount of ground just to be in a position to provide that same help defense.

Basically, 3-pt shooting is a cheat code to more efficient shots everywhere else.

I think teams should have a healthy mix of midrange game and 3 point offense

You don’t want to be like the rockets (shooting the 3 and not adapting) or end up like the Spurs (rarely shooting 3s with an archaic offense)
That Rockets shyt in the playoffs where they missed 27 or so 3s in a row in unacceptable. You dont keep putting that shot up when it aint falling. They get compared to the Warriors a lot, but even they would have moved in and hit some 15 footers to get some type of points

Yeah I never understood that comparison because the Warriors and rockets offense is night and day

Warriors was/is all about motion and taking the best shot available. They’d mix it up and besides it would be curry and Klay taking threes not dudes like Gordon chucking threes

Yep. Seems like everybody had the neon green light to shoot on Houston. Not saying there wasnt a green light on GS, but they knew when and who was gonna take those shots.

Funny you mention Gordon. That never know when to not stop shooting, no matter how cold he is from 3.:snoop:

which is why it makes no sense for teams to try and copy the warriors....you're missing klay and curry....its not the same

Which is also why you need your GM to develop a well rounded team. Invest in specialists from 3, but don't force your stars to take 3s if they aren't that effective from 3.

Harden actually has a solid midrange game that can't be utilized in the D'antoni offense. I think it makes sense to mix a few in if he's having an off or inefficient night.
