Cap space is something they have already and in reality isn't something they have much use for. Keeping him isn't weighing the team down.Report: Trail Blazers offered expiring contracts to Cavaliers for Kevin Love
What the fukk was Cleveland thinking not making this trade even if it meant not getting any valuable assets in return?
Cap space is something they have already and in reality isn't something they have much use for. Keeping him isn't weighing the team down.
If they're not getting extra stuff in terms of picks, all the team would be doing with that cap space is try to get a bad contract like Love's in return with some assets anyway. Might as well keep him.
They still view him as a better asset than a straight up liability. In their mind, they can get that offer a year from now from a team looking to justify their cap room after being shut out of 2021.His presence this year brought the team down as he essentially the main player who undermined the coach even before the “thug” incident happened. He’s been a problem all season long and admitted as much. They need to rebuild the team culture and it starts with getting him off the roster.
That was essentially their free chance to get out of that contract without to give up assets/take on bad contracts in return.

And yes, he's a drain on their locker room, but trading him only opens the door to overpaying someone in this year's class who will make them deeply regret it. Sure the locker room would be happier, but the culture there won't truly change til they start winning. They need a personality change as much as any team in this draft.
Not that I agree with the premise, but teams feel like contracts such as his don't get worse in value because the years decrease. If they were offered neutral value with 3 years left, maybe in a year that offer now comes with a 2nd rounder or two assuming Love remains productive. Assuming they re-up Drummond to a max, with all the space they still have, it's easy to offer a bad deal for the sake of spending, so they probably feel keeping Love is better than overpaying for Derrick Favors or Serge Ibaka or Paul Millsap or someone like that just to meet the salary floor because those long term deals become tough to move. And it would require taking on a bad contract in exchange for giving up Kevin Love. Portland has been the only team that’s been linked to Kevin Love for the past few years which why they took on the Whiteside contract from the beginning.
The longer they wait, the more his contract becomes a liability especially since he can’t seem to stay healthy.

Oh I understand. Love has always gotten a pass for being petulant because when it's him vs. the situation he's in, people always justify it by saying "well his team is trash tho. I'd do the same thing"I totally get your point. My thing is that you just can’t keep him on the roster after what has transpired this year. He essentially undermined the coach the entire year and got a free pass for it when “other players” have gotten criticized for doing the exact same thing.
You can’t pop shyt off the entire year and then come back and apologize after the coach gets let’s go. That’s exactly what he did with Colin Sexton. He even did it with his teammates on the court. It’s obvious he wants no part of Cleveland anymore and they should have found a way to accommodate that.
