I know the nba is trying to squeeze every little dollar out but I still don't get the point of the award show after the season. Why not have the award show right before the playoffs.

I disagree. Teams are gearing up for the playoffs and I'm assuming the players on those teams want as much time as possible to prepare for their opponents and practice. So most players on the playoff teams probably ain't trying to add on a day of travel to attend the awards before the playoffs start. It's already hard enough to get players to attend as is now.
On a side note NBATV is so poorly run. The schedule listings are all fukked up. Half the time I try to DVR something a different program is showing or they are running gametime to talk about some news from the day. Now even going to the NBATV website to look for the schedule and they only have the current program showing and nothing else for the next couple of days. All I'm trying to do is record the Finals Film Room from game 4.

The Lakers need to make something happen, unfortunately asides from KD opting out (highly unlikely) the rest of the free agent signings still come with question marks as to can they form up together and compete with the Warriors.
Next offseason is more promising, but can Laker fans be content with watching another offseason of dazzling free agent moves and standing pat?
Next offseason its klay and kawhi.
The challenge now is Randle, his contract is up, do you let him walk for nothing or do you risk spending cap space on him for several years with the intent of trading him before next offseason.
The deng contract can be packaged with a Kuzma, maybe even Hart for a decent pick.
But Lebron and PG seem to be the cream of the crop this free agency, assuming KD stays (he will).
