I too inherited high inserted calves that dont ever grow from my dad, but my quads and hams grow pretty quick making them look even smaller :sadbron:

nikka was hogging the dip bar and was using the only weight belt...had to do it real nikka way and just hold the DB between my thighs. Great core workout when you do dips that way. :deadrose:

I did 3 miles of running and bicep.

I read this article that cardio makes you gain weight. :wtf: They said that long slow jogs make you body want to store fat instead of burn it, and that the fat burning zone was a myth. I have been doing some mild jogging, (5.7 MPH for 4 miles two days ago) so last night, I thought I would just push myself and set it at 7 MPH. For 0.5 miles, I ran it at 6.5 MPH. Cardio-wise, it was difficult and I was sweating like a hog. I'm thinking I need to stop jogging it at a mild pace. :to:

There's always a new article citing a new insight or new development. Look at the woman who just won the Los Angeles Marathon:

Ain't no Burger Kings & Queens outchea doing sprints nor marathons. When I did HIIT religiously I lost about 15 pounds in two months - looked cut as hell, but too slim for my liking. Now I mix cardio into my routine in different ways. I'll do a 5 minute warm up before I lift; farmer's walks up two flights of steps between sets; shadow boxing with 5 pound weights in my hands between sets; 20 minute HIIT sessions on my recovery days. Also bike a lot. Cardio has not made me gain a fukking pound. It leans me out consistently.

Yeah, I didn't agree with the article fully, but I did see that I wasn't pushing myself enough with the long slow jogs.

I'm doing more cardio because I can't do heavy upper body lifting anymore because I have osteoarthritis in my shoulder. I basically do bicep and tricep for upper body weight lifting. No bench press, no pull-ups, no dips, no over head press. It sucks.

No doubt, I feel you on that. I have to avoid certain exercises because of a back injury from when I played basketball. You can still craft a productive routine working around all that. Have you tried HIIT?

Yes, but I rarely do it.
High-speed sprint, then jog, then sprint, then jog, repeat until you lose all control of bodily functions and poop all over the gym's treadmill.
Or I do burpees as the high-intensity part, then walk as low intensity part, repeat.

It think the article actually has some validity in the sense of your body adapting to the same pace and distances.

You see a lot of people pounding away on the treadmill with the same metrics and no seeing gains. I think the issue is jogging and not cardio per say. When that's your primary form of exercise and you don't increase intensity the results diminish.

@Walt the things you are doing are actually higher level than just steady state. Combined with weight training it's ideal if people can handle it.

Word, I see that for sure. And I've definitely had the experience of watching a flabby and sick woman/man slave away on the treadmill or elliptical at a Mr. Burns pace for weeks and weeks and make no progress. But I have to imagine that also has a lot to do with what they do/don't do when not in the gym.

I'm not into crossfit training whatsoever, but I definitely have noticed that when I add brief bursts of cardio to m lifting days, my workouts are better.

HIIT is the only type of cardio I do. It's too effective for me to do anything else. I used to mostly run flat on the treadmill for my routine, 2 min intervals running, 1 min walking. Now since I have chronic knee pain I had to quit running flat. I now do incline 1 min intervals on the treadmill which is much harder. Some days I get depressed thinking about what I'm about to have to do physically:mjcry:
