It is beneficial and in most cases will provide superior results over lower-intensity, steady-state cardio. Most folks are clueless when it comes to training modalities (thus it being a "well-known" cheat code) so they don't know this and then they spend inordinate amounts of time doing LISS and making less (or no) progress.
To be fair, though, sprint work is more mentally and physically demanding than MISS/LISS, so to some folks the trade-off of working harder might not be worth it.
